SMOKING, POOR DIETARY HABIT’S & SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE OBJECTIVES: 1. Discuss what is Smoking. 2. Recognize the form of smoking and substance from tobacco 3. Identify the term of poor dietary habits. 4. What is a sedentary lifestyle and the types of diabetes? SMOKING WHAT IS SMOKING? Tobacco smoking is the practice of burning tobacco and ingesting the resulting smoke. The smoke may be inhaled, as is done with cigarettes, or simply released from the mouth, as is generally done with pipes and cigars. The practice is believed to have begun as early as 5000–3000 BC in Mesoamerica and South America. Agenda Introduction Building confidence Engaging the audience CIGARETTES CIGGIES, DARTS, CANCER STICKS *HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT THEM FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT FOLTERS, FLAVORS AND FIBS FROM TABACCO COMPANIES. Roll-Your-Own Rollies (or roll-your-own tobacco) are often believed to be less harmful and more natural than factory-made cigarettes. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Shisha Shisha is a common name for waterpipe smoking, which is a traditional method of smoking tobacco in the Middle East, India and Africa. Shisha originated in ancient Persia and India but today, waterpipe smoking can be found around the world. Waterpipes are also referred to as ‘hookah’, ‘arghile’, ‘narghile’, ‘goza’ or ‘hubble bubble’. E-cigarettes & Vaping Using e-cigarettes (known as ‘vaping’) is a relatively new way that some people try to quit smoking. The health effects of e-cigarettes are still being researched, so their long-term effectiveness and safety is unknown. Some of the chemicals found in tobacco smoke include: – Nicotine (the addictive drug that produces the effects in the brain that people are looking for). – Hydrogen cyanide – Formaldehyde – Lead – Arsenic – Ammonia – Radioactive elements, such as polonium – Benzene – Carbon Monoxide – Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) – Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) CIGARS Many people view cigar smoking as more sophisticated and less dangerous than cigarette smoking. Yet one large cigar can contain as much tobacco as an entire pack of cigarettes. CIGARETTES Regular cigarettes, called combustible cigarettes, contain tobacco, added chemicals, a filter, and a paper covering. People who smoke them expose themselves to over 7,000 chemicals when they inhale the smoke from their cigarettes. People around them are also exposed to the same chemicals through secondhand smoke. Cigarette smoking accounts for almost all tobacco-related illnesses and deaths in the United States. SMOKELESS TABACCO First developed in Sweden, snus are a "spit-free" form of tobacco and have been marketed aggressively in the United States as an alternative nicotine- delivery system in smoke-free environments. American snus are available in a variety of flavors, including spearmint, wintergreen, vanilla, and various fruits. PIPEPS Smokers also often claim that they are avoiding the worst health dangers of enjoying tobacco by actively avoiding cigarettes, which they perceive to be the worst type of nicotine delivery system. The common excuse is that they smoke one or two cigars a day and that that is nothing compared to 20 – 30 an average cigarette smoker smokes. Poor dietary habits occurs when the person does not follow the principles of good nutrition, Adequacy, balance, and variety. Adequacy - Moderate amount of nutrients to maintain normal body function BALANCE - REFERS TO CORRECT COMBINATION OF NUTRIENTS Variety- Consumption of different types of food products EFFECTS OF POOR DIETARY HABITS UNDERCONSUMPTION AND OVERCONSUMPTION OF UNHEALTHY FOOD, DRINKS AND INTAKE OF LOW-FIBER, HIGH-FAT, HIGH SALT AND HIGH SUGAR FOOD ARE ALL PART OF POOR DIETARY HABITS. ❑ MALNUTRITION ❑ RESULTING TO STRESS ❑ TIREDNESS ❑ SLEEP DEPRIVATIONS ❑ BRAIN WEEK FUNCTIONS ❑ INDIGESTION ❑ HEART PROBLEMS WHAT ARE THE USUAL REASONS WHY OF DEVELOPING UNHEALTHY HABITS? 1. Learning from Parents, guardian without healthy eating habits. 2. A family not having meals together. 3. Busy Schedule. 4. Lack of desire, eating healthy food. 5. Poverty. 6. Emotional & Mental Condition. Sedentary lifestyle -occurs when an individual lacks the recommended level of regular physical activity or if he/she is physically inactive. What does physical inactivity causes you? Increase risks of certain cancers Contribute to anxiety and depression Risk factor to certain cardiovascular diseases Increase risks of having a coronary heart disease and obesity Decrease in skeletal muscle mass due to excessive sitting High blood pressure and increased cholesterol levels What are the types of diseases associated with unhealthy lifestyle? 1. Cardiovascular Disease a disease of the heart and blood vessels and is the leading cause of death in the Philippines. What are the types of cardiovascular diseases? Arteriosclerosis - a condition causing the arteries to harden and thicken. Some types are natural to growing old. Atherosclerosis - type of arteriosclerosis where deposited fat hardens and becomes plaque on arterial walls. Plaque build-up can begin as early as two years old. Coronary heart disease - coronary arteries (pathway of blood to the heart muscles) are narrowed or blocked; a disease of the coronary vessels and not the heart. Major Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease -Smoking -Diabetes - Hypertension -Cholesterol -Age -Obesity -Physical inactivity Heart attack - cardiac muscle failure due to lack of blood flow to the heart. Angina Pectoris - chest pain from narrowed coronary arteries due to inadequate oxygen for the heart. Heart Rhythm Abnormalities/Arrythmia bradycardia, irregular heart rhythm i.e., tachycardia, palpitation) brought about by faulty electrical conduction system that is worsened by uncontrolled stress levels and high caffeine intake. Congestive Heart Failure - The Heart is not able or below its normal capacity to pump blood, causing liquid to accumulate in the lungs and other areas of the body. 2. Cancer - a disease where cells divide in an uncontrolled pace. These cells can form a tumor, which can be identified benign or malignant through a biopsy procedure. What is the difference between malignant and benign tumor? Malignant is cancerous. The tumor can spread to invade and destroy nearby tissues and body parts. This process is called metastasis. Benign is not cancerous. Benign tumors may increase in size but do not invade other body parts. It is typically harmless unless it obstructs normal tissues or organs. What are the four major categories of cancer? Carcinoma is the most common of the major categories; an invasive malignant tumor from epithelial tissue that tends to spread to other body parts. Cancers of the skin, breast, uterus, prostate, lung, stomach, colon, and rectum are examples of carcinoma. Sarcoma is a connective or supportive cancer, which include muscle, bone, fat, blood vessels, and cartilage cancers. Lymphoma arises in cells of the lymphatic or the immune system tissues characterized by abnormal production of white cells and decrease in resistance. Leukemia is the cancer of the blood or bone marrow characterized by an abnormal production of blood cells, usually leukocytes or white blood cells. 3. Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus - disease resulting from a condition of the body wherein the body is not able to produce or effectively use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas, which regulates the utilization of glucose. Many people produce sufficient amounts of insulin; however, the tissues and cells develop a resistance to the hormone which leads to impaired glucose uptake even if insulin is present. Diabetes impairs several organs in the body, which causes kidney damage, blindness, and atherosclerosis. There is no cure for diabetes. What are the types of diabetes? Type 1 Diabetes is insulin-reliant diabetes because the body produces little or no insulin at all. The immune system destroys the cells producing insulin, which causes the buildup of sugar in the blood and loss of sugar in the urine. Type 2 Diabetes is non-insulin dependent. This occurs when the body produces insulin but it cannot be used by the cells. Gestational Diabetes occurs in certain pregnant individuals. The hormones cause the body not to respond to the insulin produced by the body. 4. Chronic Respiratory Disease commonly called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); occurs in the air paths and other parts of the lungs. Symptoms include breathlessness, chronic cough, and excessive mucus production. COPD can be life- threatening and may lead to death if not detected and cured early. Major risk factors of COPD include: tobacco smoking; indoor air pollution; outdoor air pollution; and occupational dusts and chemicals like vapors, irritants, and fumes. Changing the way you think helps you become more successful in achieving a healthy body. Stop comparing yourself to others ; Don’t get frustrated over unrealistic body shapes, being healthy is more important. Bodies come in all unique shapes and sizes. Awareness of how hungry or full you are; Be aware of how you eat and how much you need to eat It’s not about the diet, it’s more of the routine; Dieting almost never work on the long term.
