FATAL FOUR ◈ CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES – disorders in the heart and blood vessels which is the leading cause of death in the Philippines. 🞚 Arteriosclerosis – arteries harden and thicken. Some are natural to growing old. 🞚 Coronary Heart Disease – pathways of blood to the heart are narrowed or blocked. 🞚 Heart Attack – cardiac muscle failure due to lack of blood flow to the heart. 🞚 Heart Rhythm Abnormalities/Arrythmia – brought by faulty electrical conduction system worsen by stress and caffeine intake. FATAL FOUR ◈ CANCER 🞚 a disease where cells divide in an uncontrolled pace that may form into tumor. 🞚 There is a greater chance of survival if treated early. 🞚 Tumors maybe Malignant or Benign: ◈Malignant – the tumor can spread and destroy nearby tissues. ◈Benign – may increase in size FATAL FOUR ◈ DIABETES MELLITUS – condition wherein the body can not produce or effectively use insulin. ◈ Type 1 Diabetes – the body is unable to produce insulin. Mostly hereditary. ◈ Type 2 Diabetes – the body has a high glucose level due to unhealthy lifestyle. ◈ Gestational Diabetes – for pregnant women but not FATAL FOUR ◈CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASE 🞚 Occurs in the air paths and other parts of the lungs. 🞚 Can be life threatening and may lead to death if not detected and cured early. WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF THESE DISEASES? RISK FACTORS ◈ Some of the unhealthy habits that mainly contribute in acquiring Non – Communicable Diseases: 🞚 Smoking 🞚 Substance Abuse 🞚 Unhealthy Diet 🞚 Sedentary Lifestyle SMOKING ◈Causes 1/3 of the number of cancers in the world. ◈Each stick contains about 4,000 chemicals that harms our body cells. ◈Consuming a cigarette would cut an individual’s life for at least 5 minutes. CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES Substance Body Effect Makes cigarettes addictive. NICOTINE Makes the heart beat fast. Lightheadedness and upsets stomach. Makes the heart do more to supply sufficient oxygen in the body. CARBON MONOXIDE More heart works results into various cardiovascular diseases. Harmful byproduct that accumulate inside the respiratory TAR system. Build-ups clog the arteries, veins and lungs. KINDS OF TOBACCO SMOKE KIND ‘AKA’ WHO? FIRST – HAND MAINSTREAM The SMOKERS SMOKING SMOKING Smoke from lit cigarette that is both inhaled and exhaled. SECOND – SIDESTREAM PEOPLE AROUND a smoker HAND SMOKING Very dangerous smoke puffed out by the SMOKING smokers. THIRD – HAND __________ OBJECTS AROUND a smoker SMOKING Chemical substances that may attach to hair, clothes, walls, floors, and furniture. POOR DIETARY HABITS ◈Occurs when a person doesn’t follow the principles of good nutrition: 🞚 Adequacy – moderate amount of nutrients 🞚 Balance – correct combination of nutrients 🞚 Variety – consumption of various food products CONSEQUENCES ◈ Leads to malnutrition, such as Underweight, Overweight and Obesity. ◈ Resulting into stress, tiredness, sleep deprivation, weak brain functions, indigestion, and heart problems. ◈ Diseases such as: 🞚 High blood pressure 🞚 Type 2 Diabetes 🞚 Certain types of Cancer 🞚 Depression 🞚 Eating Disorders ( Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder) PERFORMANCE TASK 1: “EXTRACTION OF BAD SEEDS” ◈ The class is grouped into 4. ◈ Each group will create a Campaign Video that will show ways on battling Improper Habits that may lead to acquiring Lifestyle Diseases.
