REVIEWER GRADE 11 CHAPTER 3: MODIFIABLE RESK FACTORS AND LIFESTYLE DISEASES Modifiable risk factors - These are the bad habits that can be changed or controlled through lifestyle choices. Non-communicable diseases - These are diseases that are non-infectious illnesses but can be inherited or developed based on the individual’s lifestyle. Smoking - Is the act of inhaling and exhaling the smoke from a burning substance, typically tobacco. Tobacco - Is a plant grown for its leaves, which are dried and fermented before being put in cigar, cigarettes, or pipes. 3 kinds of Tobacco products 1. Electronic tobacco products - These are electronic devices that simulate the act of smoking. They typically consist of a battery, a heating element, and a cartridge containing e-liquid. 2. Combustible tobacco products - These products are burned to produce smoke. 3. Non-combustible tobacco products – These products does not involve burning. Tar - is a sticky, brown substance formed when tobacco is burned. Carcinogens - It is a toxic substance that causes cancer. Nicotine - is a highly addictive chemical compound found in tobacco plants. Carbon Monoxide - is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas that is produced when tobacco is burned. 3 types of Smoke 1. Mainstream Smoke - the smoke directly inhaled into the smoker’s lungs through the burning cigarette. 2. Side stream Smoke - Combination of smoke given off by the burning end of a tobacco product and the smoke exhaled by the smoker. It is the smoke puffed out by the smoker called environmental tobacco. 3. Third-hand Smoke - It refers to the cigarette offshoots which is attached to the smoker’s hair and clothing as well as various surfaces like walls, floors, furniture, chairs, and toys. R.A 9211 - Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 - A comprehensive law in the Philippines that regulates the packaging, use, sale, distribution, and advertising of tobacco products. Poor dietary habits - is about not eating enough healthy food. Under consumption and over consumption of unhealthy food and drinks. Dietary habits - These are the usual choices of food that people make. 3 PRINCIPLES OF GOOD NUTRITION Adequacy – refers to moderate amounts of nutrients to maintain normal body function. Balance – Refers to the correct combination of nutrients with the right proportion. Variety – refers to the consumption of different types of food products within the food groups. FOOD GROUPS GO FOODS CARBOHYDRATES - It is one of the three macronutrients, along with proteins and fats. They are the body's primary source of energy. GROW FOODS PROTEIN AND DAIRIES - These are foods that are high in protein and help our bodies grow. GLOW FOODS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES - These are foods that are high in nutrients and antioxidants that help promote healthy skin, hair, and nails. Sedentary lifestyle -It occurs when an individual lacks the recommended level of regular activity or he/she is physically inactive. Barriers of Being Physically Active Lack of time Lack of motivation Health issues DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE Cardiovascular disease - A disease of the heart and blood vessels and is the leading cause of death in the Philippines. Cancer - A disease where cells decide in an uncontrolled pace. Cancer is not contagious or caused by injuries or accidents. Malignant - It is a type of cancer that the tumor can spread to invade and destroy nearby tissues and body part. Benign - It is a type of cancer that may increase in size but do not invade other parts. It is typically harmless unless it obstructs normal tissues or organs. Diabetes - It is a disease resulting from a condition of the body wherein the body is not able to produce or effectively use insulin. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - Commonly called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); occurs in the air paths of the lungs. Emphysema - It is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that develops over time and involves the gradual damage of lung tissue, specifically the destruction of the alveoli. CHAPTER 4: STRESS MANAGEMENT STRESS - Is a natural human response to challenges and threats. It's a complex interplay of physical, emotional, and psychological reactions that help us adapt to demanding situations. 2 types of stress Eustress - It is a positive type of stress that can motivate and energize. Distress - It is negative type of stress that can overwhelm and harm your health. STRESSORS - is a situation or event that causes us to feel stressed. TYPES OF STRESSORS 1. Financial Stressors - are the pressures and challenges associated with money, personal finances, and economic conditions. 2. Physical stressors - These are stressors that directly affect your physical body. 2. Psychological stressors - These stressors are related to your thoughts and mental processes. 3. Social stressors - are aspects of social interactions and societal structures that cause stress and strain on individuals. 4. Life transitions stressors - are significant events or transitions in a person’s life that require substantial adjustment, adaptation, or coping.
