COMMUNICATION the transmission of ideas and emotions between or among persons with the use of verbal and nonverbal cues COMMUNICATION helps people adapt to or survive in the place they live in When did we start communicating? “We cannot not communicate.” - Paul Watzlawick In everything we do, we always communicate But, when is communication successful? It is when the receiver understands an idea as the sender intended it. THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION MESSAG FEEDBACK ENCODE DECODE (MESSAGE E (STIMULU /STIMULUS S) ) SOURCE/ CHANNEL RECEIVE SENDER R CHANNEL BARRIER (NOISE) CONTEX T THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION MESSAGE (STIMULUS) idea, concept, emotion, desire, or feeling that a person desires to share with another human being. SOURCE/ SENDER the one who gives the message Encoder of the message ENCODE The process of converting message into words or action, or other forms that could help the receiver to understand the message easily CHANNEL medium or vehicle by which we are able to transmit the message to the recipient. DECODE The process on how the receiver will interpret the message given by the sender. RECEIVER the recipient of the message decoder of the message. FEEDBACK The reply, response, reaction of the receiver. Feedback is also a message. BARRIER (NOISE) The factors that negatively affect the flow of communication CONTEXT the setting in which communication takes place EXAMPLE At a thrift store Erika: Hi, miss. This one has no tag. How much does this dress cost? Cashier: Oh that would be 280 pesos. Erika: I see. I’ll take it then. Erika then hands over 220 pesos to the cashier. Cashier: Ah, miss, this isn’t enough. You still need to give me 60 pesos more. Erika: Oh! It’s 280. I thought you said the dress was 218 pesos. My bad. Here’s the 60 pesos.
