HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: RESPONSE GUIDELINES – 008 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Automatic Fire Alarms (AFA) Revision: 6 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 4 PURPOSE The purpose of this guideline is to provide standardized and predetermined responses to all incidents classified as an Automatic Fire Alarm by Northwest Central Dispatch (NWCD). POLICY It shall be the policy of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department to follow this guideline. However, it may be altered to achieve a more appropriate response based on information received from NWCD or to achieve a faster response based on location and/or status of fire department apparatus and personnel. PROCEDURE A. Automatic fire alarm in fire position and residential automatic dialing fire alarm systems (including local fire alarms not tied into the Communication Center), the still district or closest engine, and still district or closest ambulance and Tower 22 will respond. Squad 22 will respond if the still district ambulance is not available. B. Telephone reports from a single-family residence indicating a single station smoke detector is activating with no smoke or fire conditions observed would be dispatched by NWCDS as an automatic fire alarm. The shift commander or company officer should downgrade the incident to a Code 2 response and respond in a non-emergency mode. C. Automatic fire alarms in the fire position in target hazard buildings the response will be as follows: 1 Target Hazard Grid: 2101TH, 2102TH & 2103TH 1. DEFINITIONS An Automatic Fire Alarm is any alarm system, monitored by NWCD or private company, that send a report of the system in full fire to the monitoring agency. EXCEPTIONS Where MABAS Illinois Policies and Procedures current online reference or MABAS 1 Operating Guidelines/Policy Statements are in conflict with HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines, HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines will take precedence.
