HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES – 007 September 1, 2023 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: STATION/APPARATUS ASSIGNMENTS Revision: 2 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE Personnel choose station and apparatus assignments according to Department seniority and qualifications as determined by the Fire Chief, and as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. DEFINITIONS POLICY Personnel shall be permitted to select their regular fire station assignments and their regular apparatus assignments as described in detail in Article VIII of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. During the selection process each station shall have one of the selected apparatus officer positions filled by a Captain. The selection process shall result in each of the four department Captains assigned to a different station with a Captain assigned to each Engine. When a vacancy occurs in a chosen position, (i.e.: sickness, compensation day, vacation day, schools, etc.), the company officer will, with existing station personnel, fill the vacancy to best meet the station and department needs for that day, and with the approval of the Shift Commander. Detail personnel shall fill vacancies based on their qualifications and will be assigned by the company officer. Example: Members normally assigned to a station may assume those vacated position(s) within their chosen station with the approval of the company officer. Those members being detailed into a station shall fill the vacated position(s) as assigned by the company officer. With the prior approval of the company officer, exchange of duty shall be position for position, assuming that the individuals are of equal or greater qualifications. However, if prior approval has not been obtained from the company officer, the person will be assigned 1 as needed. Hirebacks shall assume the position that the shift commander or company officer assigns that person. As part of the annual station and apparatus selection process, the department will include an overview of the provisional paramedic process for the coming year. This information will include, but is not limited to, the number of provisional paramedics anticipated during the coming year, the paramedic preceptor selection process, and any changes that may occur related to paramedic preceptor station/apparatus assignment. From time to time, additional training may take place that requires personnel to be temporarily assigned to a station or specific apparatus. Shift Commanders should schedule these details in such a way to not displace a picked position firefighter. However, there may be situations that require temporary details that may displace a picked position firefighter. PROCEDURES EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES End of Document 2
