Go to menti.com Enter code: 8368 4317 HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT STUDYING PSYCHOLOGY? Go to menti.com Enter code: 8368 4317 WHY STUDY PSYCHOLOGY? Relevant to understanding ourselves and others Aids in the understanding of biology (genes, physiology), environment and behaviour relationships. (Attempts to) Delineate ‘fact’ from intuition. Promotes critical, logical evaluation of evidence in order to reach reasoned conclusions. ‘PSYCHOMYTHOLOGY’ WHY UNDERSTANDING ASSUMPTIONS IS SO IMPORTANT Ten sources of misconceptions about research findings in Psychology: Word of mouth Desire for easy answers and quick fixes Selective perception and memory Inferring causation from correlation Post hoc, Ergo propter hoc reasoning Exposure to a biased sample Reasoning by representativeness Misleading film and media portrayals Exaggeration of a kernel of truth Terminological confusion Reference: Lilienfield, Lynn, Ruscio & Beyerstein (2010). 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology From the research laboratory to the public The rise of ‘Psychomythology’ From phdcomics.com EXAMPLES: RESEARCH IN PSYCHOLOGY – TRANSLATIONS IN POPULAR MEDIA We only use 10% (or 20%) of our brain People with Autism are like the ‘Rain Man’ …. Or the ’Good Doctor’ Autism is a spectrum condition with a very wide range of capabilities. Polygraph tests are always accurate in detecting when people are lying Assesses levels of physiological arousal, related to lying but can also be associated with high degrees of stress Can be ‘tricked’ Subliminal messages can alter behaviour and make people buy things Brief, rapid presentation of stimuli may ‘prime’ attention towards a particular piece of information (increase salience), but no evidence that we are subconsciously driven to make certain purchases as a result. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY OTHER EXAMPLES OF PSYCHOLOGY IN POPULAR MEDIA? DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ANALYSIS Each discipline in Psychology provides insight into different aspects of behaviour Gazzaniga et al., (2016) SO ARE WE A PRODUCT OF NATURE OR NURTURE? PAYING ACCURATE ATTENTION CAN BE HARD! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo https://youtu.be/ubNF9QNEQLA SCIENTIFIC METHOD Description Coherent set of interconnected ideas(theory) typically built on past observation Image area Prediction Hypotheses based on theory setting out parameters Control Attempt to eliminate biasing influences Explanation Systematic evaluation of observations in reference to theory and hypothesis. Gazzaniga et al., (2016) ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN! ……. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing! Wiesel and Hubel were trying to characterise the function of different cells in the visual system, specifically parts of visual cortex that respond to dots. The equipment broke and then they observed firing increased firing rates Turns out the cells being measured were specific to a type of stimulus, just not the one they thought they were measuring. …..Insert Nobel Prize here! UNDERSTANDING RESEARCH FOUNDATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE What do we learn in 1SFP that relates to professional psychology ….. and any other profession?? SFP/Research Professional Practice Challenge/test assumptions Challenge pre-conceptions Control/account for bias Reflect on bias/positionality Objectivity Non-judgemental/open Critical evaluation of evidence Critical evaluation of evidence Structured hypothesis testing Reasoned case evaluation Application of evidence-based methodologies Application of evidence-based assessments/interventions/therapies Critical/objective review of outcomes and limitations Critical/objective review of outcomes Evolution of theory Evolution of practice Application to practice/real world contexts Better client/patient outcomes NEXT WEEK RECORDED LECTURES DUE TO LABOR DAY PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE: LECTURE 2 ITRIP LECTURE 1: CONCEPTS AND MEASUREMENTS.
