INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY LESSON OBJECTIVES: Demonstrates an understanding of media and information sources, and values them as part of communication tools. LESSON OBJECTIVES: Identifies the similarities and differences of media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy. WHAT IS MEDIA? A physical object used to communicate messages. WHAT IS INFORMATION? A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from the study, experience, instruction, signal or symbols. WHAT IS LITERACY? The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute using printed and written materials associated with varying context. MEDIA LITERACY highlights the capacity of an individual to understand the functions of media and determine the relevant use and worth of media platforms. This means that an individual knows how to use or manage media accounts or media platforms. INFORMATION LITERACY is a transformational process in which the learner needs to find, understand, evaluate and use information in various forms to create for personal, social or global purposes. TECHNOLOGY LITERACY is the ability of an individual, working independently and with others, to responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technology tools to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicare information. MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY Plays an important role in communication and information dissemination. Media and information will enable us to access understand and create communication in a variety of contexts in the form of accessing, understanding and creating media and information. MEDIA MESSAGES CONTAIN “ T E X T S AND SUBCONTEXTS” The text is the actual words, pictures and/or sounds in a media messages. The subtext is the hidden underlying meaning of the message. MEDIA MESSAGES REFLECT THE VALUES AND VIEWPOINTS OF MEDIA MAKERS Everyone has a point of view. Our values and viewpoints influence our choice of words, sounds and images we use to communicate through media. INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUCT THEIR OWN MEANING FROM MEDIA Media makers attempt to conveys specific messages, people receive and interpret differently. MEDIA MESSAGES CAN BE DECODED By deconstructing media, we can figure out who created the message, and why. We can identify the techniques of persuasion being used to recognize how the makers are trying to influence us. MEDIA LITERATE YOUTH AND ADULTS ARE ACTIVE CONSUMERS OF MEDIA Many form of media-like television-seek to create passive, impulsive consumers. THANK YOU
