IRVING FANG’S EARLY BEGINNINGS OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA THE SIX INFORMATION REVOLUTIONS Lecture by: Asst. Prof. Joana Marie S. delos Reyes, MA Program Chair, Communication Arts School of Arts and Sciences NU Fairview OBJECTIVES Define Information Revolution Introduce the beginnings of communication Present the importance of communication and media to society INFORMATION REVOLUTION The term information revolution describes the "radical changes wrought by computer technology on the storage of and access to information since the mid-1980s" or current economic, social and technological trends beyond the Industrial Revolution. REVOLUTION? 1. WRITING SIX 2. PRINTING INFORMATION 3. MASS MEDIA REVOLUTION 4. ENTERTAINMENT 5. TOOLSHED HOMES 6. THE “HIGHWAY” THE FIRST REVOLUTION The Writing Revolution began around the eighth century B.C. with the convergence of the phonetic alphabet from Phoenicia and the use of papyrus from Egypt. It enabled humans to record and store knowledge in written form. Example: The ancient Greek philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, used writing to document their philosophical ideas, which continue to influence modern thought. THE SECOND REVOLUTION The Printing Revolution started in the fifteenth century in Europe with Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. It combined paper and a movable type system to mass-produce books and documents. Example: Gutenberg's Bible, printed in the mid-15th century, became one of the first major books produced with movable type, revolutionizing the dissemination of religious texts. THE THIRD REVOLUTION The Mass Media Revolution emerged in the mid-19th century with advancements in paper production, printing, and the invention of the telegraph. It transformed information dissemination and introduced newspapers, magazines, and photography. Example: The telegraph played a crucial role in transmitting news quickly, including major events like the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. THE FOURTH REVOLUTION The Entertainment Revolution began in the late nineteenth century, driven by technologies like sound recording, cameras, and motion pictures. It revolutionized storytelling and entertainment. Example: The invention of the phonograph by Thomas Edison in 1877 allowed for the recording and playback of sound, setting the stage for the music industry. THE FIFTH REVOLUTION The Toolshed Home emerged in the mid-twentieth century, transforming homes into central hubs for information and entertainment consumption. It involved technologies like telephones, broadcasting, and mail services. Example: The popularity of television in the 1950s and 1960s brought news, entertainment, and culture directly into households across the world. THE SIXTH REVOLUTION The Information Highway is the ongoing revolution characterized by the convergence of computer, broadcasting, satellite, and visual technologies. It is reshaping communication and work. Example: The advent of the World Wide Web in the 1990s marked a significant milestone in the Information Highway, revolutionizing how we share and access information globally. SHARED CHARACTERISTICS SHARED CHARACTERISTICS Each revolution involves the convergence of communication technologies. They occur during periods of societal change. They tend to democratize access to information. They lead to specialization and an overload of information. New literacies emerge to adapt to the changes. Resistance to change is common but eventually yields to media availability. Tools of communication are influenced by marketing and user preferences. They reduce the need for physical transportation of messages. The spread of communication tools is often in the hands of influential individuals or groups. Personal use of these tools can lead to decreased face-to-face communication. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW? TIME-TRAVELING NEWS ACTIVITY TIME-TRAVELING NEWS REPORT Objective: To explore the key features, impacts, and shared characteristics of each information revolution through the lens of a news reporter from the corresponding time period. TIME-TRAVELING NEWS REPORT Preparation: Divide the class into six groups, assigning each group to one of the information revolutions (Writing, Printing, Mass Media, Entertainment, Communication Toolshed Home, Information Highway). TIME-TRAVELING NEWS REPORT Research and News Report: In their respective groups, students should conduct research to understand the definitions, discussion points, examples, and shared characteristics of their assigned information revolution. Each group will create a "Time-Traveling News Report" that mimics a news segment from the time period of their revolution. TIME-TRAVELING NEWS REPORT News Report Content: The news report should be "live", where students act as news reporters, describing the revolution's features and impact as if they were reporting real-time events. Students can include key figures, technological advancements, societal changes, and relevant anecdotes that capture the essence of their assigned revolution.
