Unplanned Emergencies 80% of all emergencies are unplanned. - Most unplanned emergencies that result in evacuations occur during taxi, takeoff, and landing. 71% of fatalities occur after the aircraft has come to a stop. 64% of severe injuries occur after the aircraft has come to a stop. Less than 14% of all accidents result in fatalities. FAM 40.40 UNPLANNED EMERGENCIES 5 5 Commands When do we start shouting our commands? Therefore, completing the 30 second, silent review may be the only preparation a Flight Attendant has. When completing the 30 second silent review, remember the acronym CLUE which stands for: ✓Commands ✓Lights and Signals ✓Usable ABPs ✓Exits FAM 40.35 EVACUATION-Four Phases of an Evacuation 36 Initiating an Evacuation Flight Attendant will NOT initiate an evacuation unless pilots are incapacitated, or life-threatening conditions dictate. Wait 20 seconds, then attempt to contact Flight Deck first. If unable to contact Flight Deck or situation dictates: Fire is too hot, smoke is too thick, water is too high- GET OUT! FAM 40.35 EVACUATION-Initiating an Evacuation 43 43 Unwarranted Passenger Initiated Evacuation Flight Attendant must take decisive action Use positive commands Shout “STOP, Remain Seated” FAM 40.35 EVACUATION- Unwarranted Passenger Initiated Evacuation 45 45 Evacuation Commands, cont.
