Name: Strand/Section: Teacher: Date: ![](media/image1.jpeg)Reading and Writing Module 2: Techniques in Selecting and Organizing Information Objective At the end of this module, the students should be able to describe a written text as connected discourse. -- -- Brainstorming- one of the better and more popular methods of discovering your writing topic. The aim of brainstorming exercise is not to produce a logical flow of ideas but to provide yourself with as many choices for your topic as possible. Example of brainstorming list: Southeast Asia Hatred of Science and Math White beaches in Boracay Life in Outer Space After listing all your ideas, browse through them and pick one of the best appeals to you, or the one you know best. Graphic Organizer - Is a visual display that demonstrates relationships between facts, concepts or ideas. Types of Graphic Organizer 1\. Storyboard- graphic organizer that consists of [illustrations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illustration) or [images](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image) displayed in sequence for the purpose of [pre-visualising](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Previsualization) a [motion picture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), [animation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animation), [motion graphic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_graphic) or [interactive media](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_media) sequence. 2\. KWL Chart -- divided into three columns. The first column, 'K', is to note down the points for what the students already know about a topic before reading. The next column, 'W' is for students to list what they want to learn about the topic before reading. The last column, 'L', is for what the students learned about the topic from the reading. ---------- ------------------ ------------- **K**now **W**ant to know **L**earned ---------- ------------------ ------------- 3\. Venn Diagram- a tool that shows all possible logical relations between a finite collection of sets. 4\. Mind Map- a versatile tool which is widely used by students for note taking, brainstorming, studying memorizing, planning and structuring information. ![](media/image3.png) 5\. Persuasion Map- is a quite effective tool which assists students map out their arguments for a persuasive debate or essay. ![](media/image5.png)6. Cluster/Word Web Chart -- the students are expected to write the topic in discussion in the center circle and the details in the smaller surrounding circles. 7\. ISP Chart (Information Source Page)- these chart templates would come in handy for students who are trying to compile the list of references for any project/ assignment/ thesis they are working on. ![](media/image7.png)8. Fishbone Diagram- identifies many possible causes for an effect or problem. It can be used to structure a brainstorming session. It immediately sorts ideas into useful categories. Exercise 1 Which of the graphic organizer is the easiest for you to use? Why? Exercise 2 Read the paragraph and present the ideas using a graphic organizer. Though Facebook is just one of many social networking sites, it has unique features that make it more addictive. For example, compared to Twitter, Facebook requires you to be a friend of another user before you can follow him/her. Facebook also has fan pages for celebrities- a feature which Twitter does not have. Finally, Facebook has filters. For example Edgerank automatically monitors your activity and filters the content posted by your friends which might not be your interest. Nevertheless, both Twitter and Facebook allow real-time interactions and reconnection with friends.
