Cordillera dance -refers to traditional dances from the Cordillera region in the Philippines, a mountainous area known for its rich cultural heritage. These dances are deeply rooted in the indigenous cultures of the region and often reflect the daily lives, rituals, and beliefs of the communities. Key characteristics of Cordillera dance include: Cultural Significance Costumes and Attire Traditional Music and Instruments Distinctive Movements 1 Cultural Significance -The dances are integral to various ceremonies and celebrations, including rituals for agricultural success, healing, and community gatherings. 2 Traditional Music and Instruments -Accompanied by traditional instruments like gongs, drums, and bamboo flutes, the music enhances the cultural experience of the dances. 3 Distinctive Movements -The dances often feature energetic and rhythmic movements that mimic animal behaviors or reflect agricultural activities. 4 Costumes and Attire -Performers usually wear traditional attire, such as woven fabrics and intricate beadwork, which are significant to their cultural identity. 5 There are different dances under Cordillera group, some of these are: Banga Salisid Bendayan Turayen Lumagen/Tachok Uyaoy Manmanok 6 BANGA "Banga" literally mean pots. The Banga or pot dance is a contemporary performance of Kalinga of the Mountain Province in the Philippines. This dance illustrate the languid grace of a tribe otherwise known as fierce warriors. Heavy earthen pots, as many as seven or eight at a time, are balanced on the heads of maidens as they trudge to the beat of the "gangsa" or wind chimes displaying their stamina and strength as they go about their daily task of fetching water and balancing the banga. 7 BENDAYAN Also popularly called Bendian, this circle dance of the Benguet of Mountain Province is restaged, keeping true to the dance's context and meaning. Long known as a dance to celebrate the arrival of successful headhunters, the Bendayan has taken a new face. It is part of every Benguet festivity with the circles slowly giving way to other formations and interpretations. 8 LUMAGEN/TACHOK When the Kalinga gather to celebrate a happy occasion like the birth of a first-born baby boy, a wedding, or a budong (peace pact), the Kalinga Festival Dance (Tachok) is performed. This is danced by the Kalinga maiden. The dance imitates birds flying in the air. Music is provided by gangsa, or gongs, which are usually in a group of six or more. 9 MANMANOK (Vigan, Ilocos Sur) The Man-Manok is a dance that mimics fowls. Tribal blankets that represent the colorful plumage of wild cocks are shown off by the warriors who intend on winning the attention of the maiden hen. a dance featuring tribe roosters from the Bago Tribe competing for the attention of Lady Lien. They use blankets designed with colorful plumes as a means to attract her. 10 SALISID Salisid is a courtship dance thuat symbolizes a rooster trying to attract the attention of a hen. This is performed and portrayed by both male and female dancers who take parts as the rooster and bhen, respectively. The dance starts when each of them are given a piece of cloth known as "ayob" oe "alla". 11 TURAYEN is a Cordillera dance that originated from Gaddang Tribe in Cagayan Valley and speak a language similar to Ilokano. It is a type of occupational dance focuses on the use of swidden agriculture which consists of chopping down and burning existing plants to create temporary farming areas with supplementary hunting and fishing. In this dance, the gadding imitates birds attracted to Tabacco trees. 12 UYAOY This is an Ifugao wedding festival dance that make use gongs and is usually performed by the affluent people. Those who have performed this dance are entitled to the use of gongs at their death. 13 Overall, Cordillera dance is a vibrant and expressive form of cultural heritage that reflects the traditions, values, and social structures of the indigenous peoples of the region.
