Being Media and Information Literate In the previous unit, you were empowered to become media and information literate. You learned that it is essential to have an understanding of the narrative, have curiosity and skepticism, and develop a critical mind "to build trust in information and knowledge at a time when notions of 'truth' have been challenged" (Bokova 2017). Effects of Media and Information Literacy 1 Improved Learning Environment  SURFING THE NET  INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY  FIRE HOSE OF DATA  DATA DELUGE  DATA TSUNAMI All these threaten to “swamp” or “drown” us.  MIL is designed by UNESCO to recognize that people are learning in the classroom, as well as outside the classroom, through information, media, and technological platforms.  Through MIL, you may be able to prevent “drowning in a fire hose of data.” Effects of Media and Information Literacy 2 Mastery of the Art of Self-Expression  SELF-EXPRESSION – the expression of your personality, emotions, or ideas, especially through art, music, or acting Being media and information literate, you will be able to:  fully and effectively express your personal style through media content,  mirror the values and attitudes represented in media against your own, and  pursue your wants and passions while developing a keen sense of reality and protecting your own, privacy. Effects of Media and Information Literacy 3 Better Economic Opportunities  MIL does not only give you a greater chance of employment but also the capability of getting the right strategies to establish and maintain your own business. 4 Improved Quality of Life Quality of life (QoL), according to the Quality of Life Research Unit of the University of Toronto, is the degree to which you enjoy the important possibilities of your life.  One component of QoL is the experience of satisfaction. The European Commission adapted the 8+1 Quality of Life Dimensions Material living conditions Income, consumption, and material conditions Productive or main activity Work, education, or other activities Health Physical and mental health Education Level of education and skills Leisure and social interactions Time spent on leisure activities and social relationships Economic security and physical safety Financial security and freedom from violence Governance and basic rights Political participation and access to justice Natural and living environment Quality of the environment and access to green spaces Overall experience of life Overall satisfaction with life Effects of Media and Information Literacy 5 Greater Political Participation  Li Andersson, the former Minister of Education of Finland, said: "MIL is a key tool to combat hate speech, disinformation, and misinformation and helps to digest, critically analyze, and build on scientific evidence. It also helps in recognizing and challenging the narratives of violent extremists."  Being media and information literate makes you a responsible citizen. Effects of MIL on Society  MIL does not only bring benefits to individuals but also to society, as each individual is a part of a community. 1. More Cohesive Social Units  MIL promotes dialogue and respect for the perspectives and cultures of others. 2. Function as a Watchdog  No other function of free press is as important as the watchdog role—its ability to monitor the work of the government (Knobel 2018).  When coupled with upholding critical thinking, MIL prompts people to act and influence public opinion. Current and Future Trends in Media and Information  Recent technological advances are transforming the way we work, play, and interact with others.  In an era where post-truth is prevalent, it is not only necessary to be media and information literate; you also have to be technology literate.  You have to effectively use the latest technological tools to access, integrate, and communicate information, especially because advanced – and even “futuristic” – tools are already being used to manipulate “truth” and spread misinformation. Wearable Technologies  Wearable technology refers to electronic devices that can be worn physically either as an accessory or as part of a material used in clothing.  Examples include;  smartwatches,  health-monitoring wristbands, and  step/activity counters  Futurist and technology adviser Bernard Marr said that it would not be long before “smart masks” arrive in the market.  Active filtration and virus-killing UV light  Voice amplifier  Voice recognition  Gather online information about air quality 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  INTERACTIVITY – the functionality that describes the user’s ability to change the viewpoint. Its most important functionality is data manipulation.  Virtual reality (VR) is considered as an extension of 3D computer graphics. Having advanced input and output devices, this technology was largely used in the latter part of the Third Industrial Revolution for communicating potential advancements, such as robotics, automation, and advanced 3D printing. 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  3D PRINTING – the process of turning a virtualized 3D model into a 3D physical object. 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  AUGMENTED REALITY - is a technology that enhances the real world by overlaying digital information—such as images, sounds, and other sensory stimuli—onto our physical environment. Google Glass This creates an interactive experience that blends the virtual and real worlds.  Optical see-through display - overlays digital information onto the real world using transparent lenses. This technology allows users to see both the physical environment and virtual elements simultaneously. Smart Glass 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  AUGMENTED REALITY - is a technology that enhances the real world by overlaying digital information—such as images, sounds, and other sensory stimuli—onto our physical environment. Pokemon Go This creates an interactive experience that blends the virtual and real worlds.  Video see-through display - utilize cameras to capture the real world and then overlay digital content on the video feed. This approach allows for more complex visual effects and interactions. VR headsets with AR 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  AUGMENTED REALITY - is a technology that enhances the real world by overlaying digital information—such as images, sounds, and other sensory stimuli—onto our physical environment. This creates an interactive experience that blends the virtual and real worlds.  Handheld augmented reality systems - involve using portable devices, such as smartphones or tablets, to deliver augmented experiences. These devices AR Navigation Apps typically combine cameras, sensors, and displays to create interactive environments. 3D-Printed and Virtual Interactive Environments  HOLOGRAM - a three-dimensional image created by recording the light reflected from an object using laser beams. This technique captures the depth and detail of the object, allowing the hologram to appear realistic and viewable from different angles without special equipment. Online Learning Education has changed dramatically due to the pandemic situation brought about by COVID-19. In September 2020, the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) revealed that "more than 1 billion children are at risk of falling behind due to school closures aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19."  Language apps  Virtual tutoring  Video conferencing tools  Online learning software  MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses  Ubiquitous Learning The Advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) We hear about novel writing and copyrighting performed by AI. There are self- driving cars and voice-controlled digital assistants. In 2017, Facebook was forced to shut down a pair of chatbots in the social network's artificial intelligence division after discovering that they had created a secret language all on their own (New York Post 2017). UNESCO divided AI systems into three main categories: Artificial Narrow Weak AI that can only perform specific task and can’t perform Intelligence (ANI) outside their programming. Artificial General Strong AI that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge Intelligence (AGI) across a wide range of tasks, similar to human intelligence. Artificial Super AI that surpasses human intelligence in all aspects, including Intelligence (ASI) creativity and problem-solving.
