All about rocks Learning about rocks The rock cycle Main Idea: The Rock cycle is a process of the transformation and generation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Essential Question: How are rocks classified as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic? Concept Mapping of the different rock types 10 MINUTE TIMER - COUNTDOWN TIMER (MINIMAL) This 10 minute countdown timer is made for professional use and has some minimal sound effects in the last 5 seconds Minerals Rocks Classified on... Essential Question: How are rocks classified as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic? Igneous Rocks Igneous comes from the Latin ignis, meaning Fire. Formed through the cooling of magma or lava. Magma is solidified in 3 ways: 1) Below the surface- slow cooling magma 2) On the surface- fast cooling magma 3) On the surface- consolidation of particles from volcanic activities SAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS (Granite) SAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS (Diorite) SAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS (Cyanite) SAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS (Basalt) SAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS (Andesite) Sedimentary Rocks Formed through Deposition (process of accumulation) Materials are combinations of weathering and erosion and organic materials. Solidified through Lithification. SAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (shale) SAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (limestone) SAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (sandstone) SAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (conglomerate) SAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (bauxite) Metamorphic Rocks Formed from the exposure of sedimentary or igneous rocks to high pressure, high temp. or both. (Deep within earth’s surface) Original state of the rock is called Protolith With Distinct Foliation (repetitive layering) due to pressure, heat and friction caused by tectonic processes. SAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS (slate) SAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS (schist) SAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS (gneiss) SAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS (quartzite) SAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS (Marble) How to Classify Rocks Three key points: Texture, Grain Size and Composition Texture: Refers to the size, shape and arrangement of mineral grains and other constituents. Grain Size: Can be either aphanitic or phaneritic ○Aphanitic rocks: have grains that are too small to see or identify. ○Phaneritic rocks: have grains that are big enough to see. Composition: Distinct mineral composition GENERALIZATIONS I know it is sedimentary because… I know it is igneous because… I know it is metamorphic because…
