TLE - QUARTER II (AGRICULTURE AND FISHERY ARTS) LESSON 5: BREED OF FARM ANIMALS CONCEPT NOTES: BREEDS are a specific domestic animal having similar appearance and characteristics that differentiate them from the other animals of the same species. CHICKEN BREEDS PHILIPPINE NATIVE CHICKEN 1. BANABA Origin: Batangas province, Calabarzon Characteristics: One of the recognized native chicken breeds in the Philippines predominantly raised in Quezon and Batangas provinces. The hen has plumage color, yellow laced hackle, and grey shanks. 2. BOLINAO Origin: Pangasinan Province, Ilocos Region Characteristics: The adult male has red plumage with black breasts and tail feather. The hackle feathers are bright orange. 3. CAMARINES Origin: Bicol Region Characteristics: The adult ‘Camarines’ chickens have plumage with white and orange patterns with hackles having an orange tinge. The adult male has white earlobes and single comb. The legs have alternating patches of black and white scales and toes are white and well-formed. The beak is white with streaks of brown. 4. DARAG Origin: Islands of Panay, Visayas Characteristics: The female, also called Darag, is typically yellowish-brown. The comb is single, the earlobe is whitish and the shank is gray for both male and female. 5. JOLOANO Origin: Mindanao Characteristics: Roosters sport deep orange plumage with a predominantly black tail, occasionally speckled white. A plain head features a pea comb for both cooks and hens. Hens are predominantly a dull buff brown with pale yellow legs. 6. PARAOKAN OR PARAWAKAN Origin: Palawan in Mimaropa region Characteristics: It has long legs, a larger body and head than other local breed and an elongated neck. It is farmed mainly for their use in local sports, especially cock fights, rather than as a food source. They are usually black, but can also have reddish feather. COMMON COMMON TYPES OF DUCKS 1. NATIVE OR PATEROS DUCK It is small compared to the imported breeds.Its common color is white, black or gray.It often lays egg but non-sitters. 2. MUSCOVY DUCK Is otherwise known as Duck real or bibe. It has a high quality of meat of this kind of breed. 3. PEKING DUCK Is always characterized by the erect neck. In 2-3 months, this breed can be sold because its meat is of high quality. 4. KHAKI CAMOBELL Is well adapted on the soil. It can lay eggs easily. It can lay as many as 300 eggs in one year. COMMON TYPES OF QUIAL 1. TUXEDO QUAIL has a black and white patches on its head and body. 2. BLACK BREASTED QUAIL is black or gray in color. 3. SILVER QUIAL is white in color but its eyes are black. 4. NATIVE QUIAL is found in the forest and meadow. 5. JAPANESE SEATTLE has an American breed with rustic and maroon color below its head. 6. JAPANESE TAIWAN is well known as Chinese quail. The female’s body is black and patches of white. The male has red feathers.
