Rizal’s Homecoming: JUNE 26, 1982 THE BATTLEFIELD IN THE PHILIPPINES Rizal arrived in Manila with her sister Lucia. Rizal went to Malacañang Palace to see the Spanish Governor General Eulogio Despujol On June 27, 1892, Rizal visit his friends in Central Luzon: Rizal boarded a train in Tutuban Station and see his friends in (1) Malolos, Bulacan; (2) San Fernando, Pampanga; (3) Tarlac; (4) Bacolor Pampanga *They discussed the problems affecting their people and took the opportunity to greet them personally. Rizal returned to Manila on JUNE 28, 1982 He was shadowed by government spies who watched carefully his every movement. Homes where Rizal visited were seized by the Guardia Civil. JULY 3, 1892: RIzal attended a meeting of his compatriots at the residence of the Chinese-Filipino in Tondo, Manila. By that time, Rizal founded the La Liga Filipina: a civic league of Filipinos which Rizal desired to established Jose Ma. Burgos - loaned Rizal the money to travel December 1891 - the whole family arrived in time for the Christmas celebration Rednaxela Street & Remedios Terrace - two clinics of Rizal Lorenzo P. Marquez - a Portuguese physician that helped in building a clientele June 21, 1892 - case was filed by Gov-General Eulogio Despujol 1. To unite the Filipinos into one compact and homogenous body. 2. Mutual protection in every want and necessity. 3. Defense against all violence and injustice. 4. The encouragement of instruction, education, commerce and agriculture among Filipinos. 5. The study and application of reforms The cover page of the Constitution of La Liga Filipina was the motto of Unus Instar Omnium which means ONE LIKE ALL. On July 3, 1892, this was founded at the house of Doroteo Ongjunco in Ilaya, Tondo, Manila. and Jose Rizal was the founder. To obey the orders of the Supreme Council. 2. To help in recruiting new members. 3. To keep in strictest secrecy the decisions of the La Liga authorities. 4. To have a symbolic name which cannot change until he becomes the President of the Council. 5. To report to the Fiscal anything that the member may hear which affects the La Liga. 6. To behave well a good Filipino. 7. To help the fellow members in all ways JULY 6, 1892 - Rizal was arrested and jailed in Fort Santiago Pobres Frailes (Poor Friars) - The governor general showed some of these printed articles but Rizal have denied having those. Rizal was placed under arrest and escorted to Fort Santiago by Ramon Despujol, the nephew and aide of Governor General. Rizal began his exile in Dapitan which would last until July 31, 1896 or for a period of FOUR YEARS. REASONS FOR DEPORTATION: 1. Rizal published books and articles abroad which showed disloyalty to Spain which were “frankly anti-Catholic” and “prudently anti-friar”. 2. After Rizal’s arrival, they found a bundle of handbills entitled “Pobres Frailes”; 3. Rizal’s novel “El Filibusterismo” was dedicated to the memory of the GomBurZa 4. That the purpose in his writings is to tear Catholic Faith. Josephine Bracken - 18 year old step daughter of George Tauffer and the common-law wife of Jose Rizal Fr. Antonio Obach - required that Rizal retract his beliefs first and make general confessions of all transgressions against the church 1. Rizal gave free medical service to the poor people of Dapitan; 2. He initiated the construction of a dam or water-depository to provide clean water; 3. He made a huge relief map of Mindanao located in the town plaza; 4. Rizal assisted Hermano Costa in the construction of Linao Aqueduct to provide clean and potable water; 5.
