And beyond. 01 Theories on Information Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication *Shannon (1945) - This model is integral to the understanding of Shannon-Weaver communication as we know it today model of because it seamlessly links and communication characterizes the relationship among various communication elements Shannon-Weaver Model Of Communication *Katz and Lazarsfeld (1944) – This theory proposes that, when information is disseminated, the flow is not directly from the media to the public Two-step Flow Theory An opinion leader is a credible member of the community with whom the individuals are in social contact 02 The Information Age The Information Age The Information Age, also known as the Digital Age, is a period characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry to an economy based on information technology. The Information Age It began in the latter half of the 20th century and continues into the 21st century : Technological Advances Rise of the Internet Impact on Society Economic Shifts Cultural Changes Challenges 03 Sources of Information Libraries… These are a bountiful source of references of various types. Contents are catalogued to guide the visitors where the books are found Books… These are among the primary and legitimate sources of information Newspapers/ Magazines… These are available on newsstands and convenience stores, as well as from local sidewalk vendors Audio and video contents and information… These are accessible through radio, TV, and even cinema World Wide Web… It is an information system where various forms of information can be accessed in just a few clicks Open-collaborative sources… This kind of information source, which is generated through the contribution and collaboration among users and moderators, can also serve as our primary data gathering, which we can then verify Social Media… These are accessible and easy access to all sorts of information Indigenous Sources of Info… These are distinct communities because Indigenous knowledge is shared through oral tradition 04 The Languages of Information CODES It refers to visual cues that carry meaning. Objects, colors, clothing, and SYMBOLIC other symbols mean somethig based on CODES culture and context. For example, the color green can be a symbol for the environment, money, or for envy, depends on who is interpreting it. CODES WRITTEN It refer to the use of language in words on CODES paper, as well as how the space is used to communicate information. CODES It refers to the meanings generated TECHNICAL from how a certain piece of information CODES is created. These are common in audiovisual information. CODES SOCIAL It refer to the verbal and nonverbal CODES cues used in interaction based on the convention of a cultural group. 05 The Value of Information Literacy Information Literacy The American Library Association (2016) defines information literacy as “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the abilitiy to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information Information Disorder In the advent of fake news, may kinds of false information and wrongful manipulation surface, leading to what the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 2018) calls information disorder There are 3 categories of Information Disorder : Misinformation This is information that may be true or has some truth in it but is disseminated for harmful intentions There are 3 categories of Information Disorder : Mal-information This is the information that people share because they believe that this is true without proper verification. There are 3 categories of Information Disorder : Disinformation This is the information that people share despite their awareness that the information is false. 06 First-Hand Information First-hand information… Indigenous knowledge is a valid source of information that offers something that others may not necessarily have : first-have information that is grounded on experiences bound by culture.
