LEQ In the early 18th century, before the Industrial Revolution, China and India dominated manufacturing. In an attempt to surpass them, Europeans, specifically Great Britain began to mechanize. Advances in agriculture as well as technological advancements were being made. Thus starting the Industrial Revolution. Innovations such as the steam engine, spinning jenny, water frame, and new transportation methods were all a result of industrialization. Many changes in society were made. Western society was transformed socially and economically during the industrial revolution by changes in class structure, family dynamics, and new developments of transportation. During the Industrial revolution a change in society that occurred was the changes in the class structure. Urban areas and industrial cities began to rise. Giving a new class economic power as well as political power. This new class was known as the Middle Class. The Middle Class consisted mostly of factory, plantation, or mine owners. Working for the middle class was another newly developed class known as the working class. The working class was mostly poor, having to suffer in the conditions of where they worked. They also had to live in miserable living conditions living in company towns. Mostly splitting society into these halves of wealth and poverty. Both of the new classes were developed during the industrial revolution, coming to during the second industrial revolution. Changing the way society is shaped even in the present day. Changes in family dynamics were also a result of the industrial revolution. Having to adapt to the new changes in classes the working class was made to work in order to support themselves. Women would have to join the men in working due to the high levels of poverty. Instead of staying home and educating the children like the higher classes. Some families would also have to face splitting into specialized labor. Children would also be a part of these new family dynamics. Losing the traditional family model that the other classes used. During this time lower class and impoverished families would have to work essentially changing the way the family structure was. Innovations in transportation took a rise in the industrial revolution benefiting society economically. Steel and iron production began to grow causing an increase in railroad production. Along with the steam engine, transportation through trains increased. Goods could be transported efficiently, connecting markets. Steam engines were also used for iron ships. Which then led to the making of canals, making it easier to transport goods overseas efficiently. Both railroads and canals were cheap options that allowed transport for much more goods and for passengers as well. Innovations in transportation created further economic growth production increases.
