HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: Equipment Guidelines – 005 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMLIANT SOG Title: Apparatus Operations during Freezing Revision: Weather: Nov. 15 – Apr. 1 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE POLICY Cold weather operations require special precautions to prevent or minimize frozen components, such as valves, drain lines, etc., on the apparatus. The following guidelines shall be the responsibility of the apparatus operator in freezing temperatures, and shall be completed after November 15 and remain until April 1st. PROCEDURE A. Any apparatus equipped with under pump heat panels shall have the panels installed no later than November 15th of each year. If the heat panels are not installed due to damage, the operator is responsible to complete a work order in time so that the panels are in place by November 15th. B. After conducting daily apparatus pump test or any time after pump is used the following shall be drained: 1. All discharge lines equipped with drains 2. All suction lines equipped with drains 3. All relief valve drain cocks for relief and pilot valves C. All apparatus (Except Reserve Tower 22) will run with wet pumps. When an apparatus with a pump is sitting idle at an emergency scene for more than a couple of minutes the pump shall be put in gear to circulate the water to prevent freezing of the pump. It shall be the apparatus operator's responsibility to monitor the pump so that the pump does not overheat due to the static operation of the pump. The pump on Tower 22 will be drained of all water and left dry after each use. D. All apparatus with prepiped deluge guns shall remove the appliance from the apparatus piping and all water shall be drained from the appliance. This should be completed after each use of the appliance. 1 E. Apparatus equipped with prepiped aerial waterways shall be drained as follows after each use: Tower 22 A. Place ladder at 60°to 70° elevation. B. Open aerial drain (next to LDH supply connection, right side of apparatus). C. Open aerial valve (Located next to master stream device in basket). D. After allowing water to drain out, ladder can be bedded slowly. Aerial straight tip valve and aerial drain valve left open. Reserve Tower 22 A. Place ladder at 60°to 70° elevation. B. Open aerial drain (right rear of apparatus). C. Open aerial valve (Located next to master stream device in basket). D. After allowing water to drain out, ladder can be bedded and all valves closed. Aerial valve (Located next to master stream device in basket) closed and serial left open. E.
