HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES – 016 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: PUMP MAINTENANCE Revision: 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 4 PURPOSE This guideline covers the steps to be used when performing monthly and quarterly apparatus fire pump preventative maintenance. The quarterly maintenance shall be performed in January, April, July and October (unless otherwise stated in this guideline). POLICY The department apparatus pump valves shall be lubed with only the proper/approved lubricant on a quarterly basis. The actuating levers/rod on all department pumping apparatus shall be cleaned using only proper/approved cleaner/degreaser during regular monthly cleaning. At no time shall anything other than the approved cleaner or lubricant be used for these procedures. The underside of all department apparatus shall be cleaned with the undercarriage wash device as part of the monthly cleaning during cold weather months when village streets have been treated with ice melt – road salt. Apparatus pump back flushing shall be completed semi-annually (March and September) to remove sediment and other debris that may have built up in the pump housing. PROCEDURE Apparatus Pump Back Flushing: (The following procedure should be completed outside the fire station) 1. Drain the fire pump completely, remove all discharge and suction caps. 1 Remove steamer port caps. Inspect all suction port screens and replace as necessary. 2. Open all pump drains and port bleeders. Open all discharge valves. 3. Open all suction ports (front, sides and auxiliary side intakes). 4. Connect a 3 inch supply line to a water source (hydrant or station wall hydrant) connect the male end to a 2 ½ inch discharge port utilizing a double female. 5. Slowly open the water source and allow water to flow into, through and out of the Pump. Watch water as it exits the suction ports, once the water is clear close the pump drain. 6. As clear clean water begins to flow out of the next discharge or suction port slowly close that port down. 7. Continue this procedure until the deluge gun/waterway is the last port left open. 8. Once water is running clear from all ports and drains, shut off the water supply. 9. Open all discharge and suction bleeders to drain ports and suction pipes. 10. On pressure relief valve equipped apparatus, clean the pressure relief valve screen in toilet bowl cleaner. Dry screen with compressed air. Inspect orifice for obstructions and remove as necessary. Inspect O ring for tears or nicks. Replace as necessary. 11. The pump is now ready to be returned to service. Pump Discharge Valve Lubrication: (This procedure should be completed in conjunction with pump flushing) 1) Drain the pump completely. Remove all 2 ½ inch discharge caps and elbows. Open all 2 ½ discharge ports. 2) Operate the discharge valves and make a mental note of the operating difficulty (if any) of the valves. 3) Visualize the discharge valve ball (through the discharge opening). 4) With the valve in the closed position, spray the approved Gibbs directly onto the 2 valve ball. Operate the valve several times to distribute the lubricant. 5) Repeat above step until the valve operates in an acceptable fashion – relative ease or noticeable improvement from start. 6) Close all discharge ports, reattach any caps and/or elbows. Return the apparatus to service. Degreasing pump discharge/intake valve actuating levers. (To be completed during monthly apparatus cleaning) 1) Fully extend the discharge valve actuating lever/rod for the discharge being cleaned. 2) Apply a light coating of Gibbs to the lever/rod and allow to soak. 3) Wipe the Gibbs off the lever/rod and repeat as needed until clean. 4) Once the lever/rod is clean apply a very light coating of Gibbs to the lever/rod. 5) Repeat on all levers/rods. 6) On all apparatus equipped with a cable shift for “Road to Pump” spray a little Gibbs on the cable end to dissipate any water that may have entered during the Pump Back Flushing process. Cleaning the underside of department apparatus (To be completed during cold weather months and in conjunction with monthly cleaning) 1) Attach undercarriage wash device to station 1 ¾ houseline. 2) Locate the under wash devise under the apparatus to be cleaned. 3) Slowly turn on the water supply. Allow the undercarriage washer to rinse the underside of the Apparatus until sediment and road dirt has been rinsed off. Turn of the undercarriage washer and repeat procedure until the complete underside of the apparatus has been rinsed off. 3 DEFINITIONS CLEANERS/ LUBRICANTS: Gibbs is a spray cleaner/lubricant/protectant. PUMP VALVE LUBE –Gibbs DEGREASER –Gibbs UNDERCARRIAGE WASHER– Department built multi-spray arm used specifically for cleaning the underside of all department apparatus.
