Apparatus Operations during Freezing Weather
- Special precautions must be taken during cold weather operations to prevent or minimize frozen components on the apparatus.
- Apparatus operators are responsible for following these guidelines from November 15 to April 1.
Heat Panels
- Apparatus equipped with under pump heat panels must have them installed by November 15 of each year.
- If heat panels are damaged, the operator must complete a work order to have them replaced by November 15.
Draining Procedures
- After daily apparatus pump tests or any time the pump is used, the following must be drained:
- All discharge lines equipped with drains
- All suction lines equipped with drains
- All relief valve drain cocks for relief and pilot valves
- All apparatus (except Reserve Tower 22) will run with wet pumps.
- When an apparatus with a pump is sitting idle at an emergency scene for more than a couple of minutes, the pump must be put in gear to circulate water and prevent freezing.
Tower 22 and Prepiped Deluge Guns
- The pump on Tower 22 must be drained of all water and left dry after each use.
- Prepiped deluge guns must be removed from the apparatus piping and drained of all water after each use.
Draining Aerial Waterways
- Apparatus equipped with prepiped aerial waterways must be drained as follows after each use:
- For Tower 22:
- Place ladder at 60° to 70° elevation
- Open aerial drain
- Open aerial valve
- Allow water to drain out, then bed the ladder slowly
- Leave aerial straight tip valve and aerial drain valve open
- For Reserve Tower 22:
- Place ladder at 60° to 70° elevation
- Open aerial drain
