Department of Health Education and Promotion Faculty of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Jazan University, KSA Evidence-Based Practice (Health Promotion) 5 Steps in EBHP Dr. Yahya Alamir BSN, MAP, PhD Assistant Professor, Public Health, Social & Behavioral Sciences Contents  Steps in EBHP  Task 4 As you remember….  Evidence Based Medicine- includes  Asking clinical questions that can be answered by research,  Finding the best available evidence based on available research,  Judging whether the evidence is accurate and applicable to the patients, and  Applying this evidence in clinical practice. (the general steps of EBP) In general, the main steps of EBP  Asking answerable question  Finding the best available evidence  Appraising the evidence  Applying this evidence  Evaluating the outcome. In Health promotion We added some significant steps EBHP steps and Tasks  Needs Assessment Professional expertise & Reading  Identify a target population  Population at risk  Identify the health issues  Select the most important health issue  Identify a behavioral and or an environmental issue contributed most to the selected health issue.  Search and Read…….  The health issue among the target population and the environmental and behavioral determinants Assessing priorities EBHP steps and Tasks  Asking a professional/clinical question  Build a well–articulated, focused question that can be answered by research  This is one of the fundamental skills required for EBP (we will explore this next) EBHP steps and Tasks  Find the best and relevant available evidence  The evidence can be: Research (determinants and causes of health issue) Effective Health Promotion Intervention (s)/ Program (s) (to intervene) EBHP steps and Tasks  This step involves:  Identifying search terms which will be found in your carefully constructed question  Selecting resources in which to perform your search such as PubMed and Cochrane Library; and  Formulating an effective search strategy We Will Have a practical session in comp lab EBHP steps and Tasks  Appraise the evidence:  It is important to be skilled in critical appraisal so that you can further filter out studies that may seem interesting but are weak.  Use a simple critical appraisal method that will answer these questions:  What question did the study address?  Were the methods valid?  What are the results?  How do the results apply to your practice? EBHP steps and Tasks  Appraise the evidence:  For HP interventions and programs:  Evaluating the effectiveness and applicability of the intervention We will use both critical appraisal and evaluation intervention We will learn both EBHP steps and Tasks  Applying the evidence/ intervention:  Your professional decisions can then be made by combining the best available evidence with your expertise and your target‘s values.  These decisions should then be implemented into your practice which can then be justified as evidence based. EBHP steps and Tasks  Applying the evidence/ intervention:  In applying and evidence-based intervention you need to:  Plan for implementation  Tailor the program to fit your target and setting  Process evaluation EBHP steps and Tasks  Evaluate the outcome :  The final step in the process is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficacy of your decision.  Was the application of the new information/ program effective?  Is the program produced the desired outcome?  Should this new information/program continue to be applied to practice?  Conduct impact and outcome evaluation Task 4  Refine your first steps Target population Health issue Behavioral issue  Formulate a research question  Prepare to present your work next lecture Thank you Questions??
