The Future Role of Nursing in Health Promotion Patricia A. Chiverton, EdD, RN, FNAP, Kathryn McCabe Votava, PhD, RN, Donna M. Tortoretti, RNC, BSN, BA, CMAC, CLNCFirst Published November 1, 2003. https://doi.org/10.4278/0890-1171-18.2.192 Abstract Never has health promotion been more important than it is today. Nurses in education, practice, and research settings can participate in the advancement of health promotion not only to the mainstream but to the forefront of nursing practice. Historically, nurse educators have taught patients how to manage illness; in the future, the focus must be on teaching people how to remain healthy. Nurses must have an evidence-based understanding of the significant effect that can be made through health promotion interventions and communicate this understanding to the public at large. As more people grow in their awareness of activities that lead to good health and become knowledgeable about their own health status and the health of their families, the overall health of the population will improve Virpi Kemppainen, Kerttu Tossavainen, Hannele Turunen Health Promotion International, Volume 28, Issue 4, December 2013, Pages 490– 501, https://doi.org/10.1093 /heapro/das034 Abstract Nurses play an important role in promoting public health. Traditionally, the focus of health promotion by nurses has been on disease prevention and changing the behavior of individuals with respect to their health. However, their role as promoters of health is more complex, since they have multi-disciplinary knowledge and experience of health promotion in their nursing practice. Health Promotion Overview: EvidenceBased Strategies for Occupational Health Nursing Practice. August 2014. Workplace Health & Safety 62(8):342349DOI: 10.3928/2165079920140708-05 PUBMED Health promotion practice has evolved over the past four decades in response to the rising rates of chronic disease. The focus of health promotion is attaining wellness by managing modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, diet, or physical activity. Social media have become an important platform for health promotion. Because the determinants of health are so broad, progress in improving health is a reliable indicator of progress in implementing the overall agenda. HP is a key element of the New Public Health One of the major goals HP is to identify risk factors for disease The hope is that HP information can change behaviors to lower risk. References Parul, S.
