Summary Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 5 Dr Wisal Tingari 1- Introduction 743 In virtually all computing projects (especially at research degree level), you are assessed on what you submit at the end, e.g. 1. a written report, 2. a working program, 3. a specification, 4. detailed system designs, 5. test plans or whatever. However, it is often your initial investigative work that can make the difference between a good project and a borderline fail; Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 6 Dr Wisal Tingari 1- Introduction cont. The initial foundation for your project is a literature survey. This survey has two main components; 1. a literature search and 2. a literature review. A skill related closely to both of these components is referencing Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 7 Dr Wisal Tingari 1- Introduction cont. A literature survey acts as an introduction to your project and serves a number of purposes: 1. It justifies your project 2. It sets your project within context by discussing and critically evaluating past and current research in your area. 3. It provides other researchers with a starting point from which they can understand how your project evolved Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) Dr Wisal Tingari 8 1- Introduction cont. Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 9 Dr Wisal Tingari 2- The literature survey process Literature survey has two main components; 1. Literature search represents: the mechanics of looking for, sorting, managing and digesting the available research material. 2. The literature review represents: your written understanding, critical evaluation, and presentation of the material you have obtained. Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 10 Dr Wisal Tingari 2- The literature survey process cont. Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 11 Dr Wisal Tingari 3- Literature searching A literature search is a ‘systematic gathering of published information relating to a subject’ (University of Derby, 1995). Bearing these two points in mind, there are two golden rules you should remember when performing a literature search: 1. Allow plenty of time 2. Ensure that you make note of the full reference of any material you obtain. Research Methods - Lecture 6: Chapter 3 (Part 1) 12 Dr Wisal Tingari 3- Literature searching cont. Plagiarism: plagiarising the work of others. You need to be selective and focus in on precisely those articles and books that are specifically relevant to your work.
