Faculty of Management Department of Venture Nizhny Novgorod Creation Searching Right Articles for Literature Review Seminar 2 Dr. Waqas Ahmed 2 Agenda What is Literature Review? Why is the review important? Steps in Reviewing the Literature 3 Literature Review The word “literature” in a general context refers to novels, stories, poetries, etc. However, in the context of a research, the term “literature” in a literature review means published or unpublished research articles that others have conducted in the areas that are relevant to one’s study. Literature review involves the systematic identification, search, analysis and organization of documents containing information related to the research problem 4 Why is the review important? Shows that the researcher knows what he/she is doing The research framework is built based on previous literature and strengthened with new and emerging knowledge 5 Reason for the Review Identify what has already been done Help in the planning of what needs to be done Gives the rationale for further research Identify research strategies and procedures and also specific effective measurements Helps to avoid mistakes done by earlier researchers and build upon their strengths Help in interpreting the data from the research 6 Steps in Reviewing the Literature Identifying sources Searching for relevant material How to Read Research Paper Writing-up the Literature Review Organizing literature in dissertation Sources of Literature 8 DIFFERENT SOURCES OF INFORMATION Information What it Does Example Source General Sources Provides an overview of a Daily newspapers, news weeklies, topic and provides leads popular periodicals and magazines to where more information can be found. Laboratory studies with college students (DeSallo, 1984; Smith, 1980; Yu, 1988) find a strong negative relationship between self-esteem and fear. The same relationship was found in a survey of elderly people (Jones and Jones, 1982). Only one study contradicted this finding (Johnson, 1985). The contradictory finding may be due to the population used (prison inmates). In general, it appears that self- esteem and fear are negatively related. Self-esteem is strongly related to feelings of independence (see Gomez, 1977; Zarnoth, 1985), and independence was found to decrease fear of crime (Jones, 1982; Rosenberg, 1979). Only Hong (1980) did not find a significant relation between independence and fear of crime. “ 21 Organizing Literature Review Chronological Similarity and Contrast Topical or thematic organization Inverted pyramid organization 22 Ending Literature Review Primary Findings Problem Space/Gaps 23 Exercise Go to https://docs.google.com/document/d/1raIIh3iy9dYJWX5YS6XUJFbgWD6xVJ_s/edit Use your google credentials and make a copy Find at least 5 article relevant to your intended research topic using Bullion Terms AND, OR, “”, -, () Filled the attached sheet
