LITERATURE REVIEW Before starting the process of searching and reviewing the literature, you need to have identified a research topic! LITERATURE REVIEW Literature review is a piece of academic writing demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the academic literature on a specific topic placed in context. The literature refers to the existing body of knowledge. WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW? WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW? LITERATURE SOURCES o Academic journals o Books o Newspapers and broadcast media o Reports o Online databases o Conference papers and reports o Government and commercially produced statistics and industry data o Archives o Theses LITERATURE REVIEW ▪ Literature review is an early activity of your research. ▪ It enhances the subject knowledge. ▪ It helps to clarify research aim and research question(s) further. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? ▪ Look at the introduction and second section of a journal article. Why is it vital? So, we can learn from what has already been found in research. WHEN DOING AND WRITING A LITERATURE REVIEW, IT IS GOOD PRACTICE TO… summarise and analyse previous research and theories; identify areas of controversy and contested claims; highlight any gaps that may exist in research to date. The Literature Review Process Saunders et al. 2019 ADOPTING A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE IN YOUR READING Previewing – which is considering the precise purpose of the text before you start reading in order to establish it may inform your literature search. Annotating – conducting a dialogue with yourself, the author and the issues and ideas. Summarising – the best way to determine that you’ve really got the point is to be able to state in your own words. Comparing and contrasting – ask yourself how your thinking has been altered by this reading or how it has affected your response to the issues and themes in your research. THINGS YOU SHOULD DO NOW… ▪ Read a book chapter on literature reviews (see list in recommended reading) ▪ Read the first sections of a journal article to get an idea of what a literature review is like ▪ Do a research on Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus for literature on a potential dissertation topic ▪ Stay current and relevant – prioritise recent publications ▪ Structure clearly and logically- thematically, chronologically… ▪ Critique, don’t just agree!! ▪ Evaluate and identify gap/s QUESTIONS?
