**L1: The Evolution of Philippine Literature** **Pre-Colonial Period 900--1500s -** The roots of Philippine Literature may be traced back to pre-colonial times. As ethnic cultures emerged across the archipelago, they diversified in terms of beliefs, values, and customs. Collectively, pre-colonial literature is a literary gem that must be rediscovered in the present time. **EARLY LITERARY FORM OF THE PHILIPPINES** **Riddles** - It contains superficial words but it functions metaphorically and it is said in the form of question. Example: - - **Proverbs** - Wise statements usually given by parents or elder of the community. Example: - - **Folk Tales -** EPIC, MYTHS, LEGENDS, FABLES **\> Folk Songs** **LULLABIES** - It is locally known as \"HELE\". These are the songs sung by the parents to put babies into asleep. Song content tells the life is hard and parents are hoping that the child will not experience hardships in life **DRINKING SONGS-** It is locally known as TAGAY and sung during drinking session. **LOVE SONGS** - It is known as HARANA used by young men to win the heart of the girl they love. **SONGS OF DEATH-** It is lamentation that contain the roll of good deeds done by the dead and can make him/her memorable. **RELIGIOUS SONGS-** Songs or chants given during exorcism or thanksgiving during good harvest. **L2: Literature during the Spanish Period** How the evolution unfolded **Albita** - What we use before **Roman Alphabet** - Our alphabet after spanish colonized us **Doctrina Christiana** - Basis of religious practices and first book printed in the philippines that was published in 1593. **LITERARY FORMS** **Religious** - Religious lyrics written by Ladino poets or those verse in both Spanish and Tagalog where included in early catechism and were used to teach Filipinos the Spanish language. **Pasyon -** One of the most popular forms of religious poetry since the Spanish period is the Pasyon which presents a narrative of life and sufferings of Jesus Christ. - - The pasyon was traditionally sung and chanted antiphonally in homes and chapels throughout the Lenten season. Nowadays, the pasyon is sung and chanted only during the Holy Week. **Senakulo** - A dramatization of the pasyon, it shows the passion and death of Christ. **Dialogo** - A form of religious narrative prose. **Secular (non religious) -** A denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis. **Awit** - A colorful tales of chivalry made for singing and chanting. **Sarswela** - Spanish musical play consisting of spoken dialogue, songs, choruses, and dances. **Komedya** - is a traditional Filipino play in the vernacular adapted from the Spanish comedia de capa y espada. **Enlightenment period** On the other side of the coin, the tradition of secular literature was also rich during the Spanish Colonization. In particular, the rise of the middle class- the European-educated ilustrados paved the way for the new literary paradigm. **Jose De la Cruz (huseng sisiw) -** "O Caauaauang Buhay Co sa Iba" **Francisco "Balagtas" Baltazar -** "Labindalawang Sugat ng Puso" During Spanish period secular poetry became popular called metrical romance, a highly precise and structured poem. Shorter form of secular poetry also emerged in the form of songs for everyday experiences. - - When the reformist movement emerged in the 19th century, the ilustrado started to make their incredible mark on the history of the Philippine literature. With the heroic fearlessness, they wrote about realities of colonization- that is, the truth about the suffering of the colonized. **José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda** - Josel Rizal is the most influential among the writers during late 19th century. The legacy of his literature blossomed in both poetry and prose. **Poem -** *Mi Ultimo Adios* **PROSE -** *Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo* **Marcelo H. Del Pilar -** *Pasyong Dapat Ipag-alab ng Puso nang Tauong Baba sa Kalupitan nang Fraile* **Graciano Lopez Jaena -** *Fray Botod* **Andres Bonifacio -** *Ang Dapat Mabatid ng Mga Tagalog* **Emilio Jacinto-** *Ang Ningning at ang Liwanag* In 1898, the transition from Spanish colonization to American control began. Mirroring the rise of the Spanish literary influence was the arrival of new colonizer that signalled a new chapter in our country's literature.
