Philippine literature has evolved from the oral tradition during the pre-colonial period. It has been traced that before the colonization, Philippines is full of legends and tales which deal with ideas, thoughts and emotions of man. The literature of the Philippines before the arrival of the Spaniards was predominantly a reflection of the indigenous culture and traditions of the land. Ancient people within the Philippines used to write on bamboo. It shows customs and traditions in everyday life as trace in folk stories, old plays and short stories. Ancient Filipinos also had their own alphabet different from that brought by the Spaniards. Their first alphabet was similar to the Malayo-Polynesian alphabet. Records that remained showed folk songs that proved the existence of a native culture truly their own. Some of these were passed on by word of mouth till they reached the hands of some publishers or printers who took an interest in printing the manuscripts of the ancient Filipinos. To understand the history of a nation\'s spirit, one must exert effort to read its literature. Through a study of our literature, one can trace the rich heritage of ideas handed down to them from their forefathers. Then they can understand themselves better and take pride in being a Filipino. Through such a study, one can realize their literary limitations conditioned by certain historical factors and can take steps to overcome them. As Filipinos, who truly love and take pride in their own culture, one has to manifest deep concern for their literature, thus, this can be done through studying the literature of the Philippines. **Literature is defined broadly** as any collection of written works, but it can also refer specifically to writings considered to have artistic merit. Etymologically, the term derives from the Latin *litaritura/litteratura*, meaning \"writing formed with letters." **General Definition:** Literature encompasses all written works, including non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama. It can also include oral traditions that have been transcribed, making it a diverse field that records and transmits culture and knowledge. **Artistic Merit:** More restrictively, literature is often viewed as writing which possesses literary merit, typically characterized by aesthetic qualities and depth of meaning. This includes [works that explore] [significant themes and human experiences]. **Historical Context** Historically, the definition of literature has evolved. In Western Europe before the 18th century, it referred to all written works. The Romantic period introduced a more restrictive view, focusing on imaginative literature. Contemporary discussions often return to a broader definition, including popular and minority genres alongside canonical works. TASK PERFORMANCE \# 1 1.
