The American Revolution Review Sheet A method of communication between towns and colonies about how to challenge new British laws Committee of Correspondence A tax law which set duties on molasses and sugar imported by colonists. Accused Smugglers would be tried in Britain. Sugar Act of 1764 This requires colonist to pay tax for an item when they bought paper items. This tax had to be paid on such as legal documents and newspaper. Stamp Act of 1765 This group would sometimes would use violence to frighten tax collectors. Many colonial courts shut down because people refused to buy the stamps required for legal documents. Sons of Liberty This act stated that parliament had the power to make laws for the colonies. Declaratory Act This act placed duties on lead, paper, paints, glass, and tea. British officials used writs of assistance. This allowed tax collectors to search for smuggled goods. It took power away from the colonial governments. The Townshend Acts The tension exploded on March 5, 1770. A lone British soldier standing guard had an argument with a colonist and struck him. A crowd gathered around the soldier, throwing snowballs and shouting insults. Five were shot and killed. Others were wounded. The Boston Massacre Cheaper tea might encourage colonists to stop smuggling. Less smuggling would result in more tax money.
