Study Notes
Anatomy and Physiology I - Basic Terminology
- Anatomy: The study of the structure and form of organisms. Derived from Greek word "anatomē" meaning "to dissect or cut".
- Physiology: The study of how the body functions.
- Pathology: The study of structural and functional changes caused by disease. It is a core concept in medicine, related to preventative measures and treatment.
- Gross Anatomy/Macroanatomy: Structures visible to the naked eye.
- Microanatomy: Structures that require a microscope to see.
- Histology: The study of cells and tissues.
- Comparative Anatomy: Studying the similarities and differences in the anatomy of various animal species.
- Embryology: The study of development from conception to birth.
Descriptive Terminology (Applied to 4-footed animals)
- Terms use a standard standing position: These terms describe relationships assuming the animal is standing normally, even if the animal's actual position varies.
- Dorsal: Away from the ground.
- Ventral: Towards the ground.
- Cranial: Towards the head.
- Caudal: Towards the tail.
- Palmar: On the front leg, below the carpus (wrist), the surface facing the ground.
- Planter: On the hind leg, below the tarsus (hock), surface facing the ground.
Planes of the Body
- Median Plane (Mid-sagittal Plane): Divides the body into two equal halves (left and right).
- Sagittal Plane: Parallel to the median plane, divides the body into unequal halves.
- Transverse Plane: Perpendicular to the median plane, dividing the body into cranial (front) and caudal (rear) halves. Also divides limbs or organs at a right angle to their long axis.
- Frontal or Dorsal Plane: Perpendicular to both the median and transverse planes, dividing the body into dorsal (top) and ventral (bottom) portions.
- Rostral: Toward the tip of the nose (only used on the head).
- Bilateral Symmetry: Left and right halves of the body mirror each other.
Organization of the Body
- Cells: Basic units of life.
- Tissues: Specialized cells grouped together.
- Organs: Groups of tissues working together for a common purpose.
- Systems: Groups of organs involved in a common set of activities.
- Health: The state of normal anatomy and physiology.
- Homeostasis: The maintenance of balance in the body.
