Introduction to Design Mission: D.E.S.I.G.N.E.D. Design What is design? Simple Design is a way of finding a solution to a challenge. Appropriate What factors influence design? Functional One easy way to remember important factors influencing good design is to Economical remember the acronym S.A.F.E. Simple Simple designs are long-lasting. Appropriate A design may do the main job intended but we need to check that the design is appropriate in terms of aesthetics (attractiveness), cultural acceptance, and its impact on society (people) and the environment. 2018 Amazon Launch in India Functional A design will not work or function if it does not achieve the intended purpose. For example, a roadside sign is not functional if people cannot understand the message whilst they are travelling at normal speed. Economical The design must be economical which means that it must have a reasonable working life (longevity) and use the minimum resources (tools, information, people, materials, time, money, energy) during manufacture, use and disposal. Design Processes Design processes: Involve a sequence of organised steps which provide a solution to design challenges May take a few seconds or minutes, such as when you select clothes to wear, or may take years as is the case with the design of a motor vehicle May involve one person or many people May be simple or complex Involve evaluation and iteration (repeated steps) throughout the process The sequence involved in design processes may vary depending on the needs and available resources but general design processes follow eight steps using the acronym D.E.S.I.G.N.E.D. Design Processes 1. Describe the challenge 2. Establish ideas after research 3. Select an idea 4. Investigate the idea by testing, experimenting and research 5. Go or stop with the selected idea 6. New design - manufacture begins 7. Evaluation - a final assessment of the completed project 8. Done - the completion of the design process
