Can stand alone or has affixes added to it to create new words. Example: HAPPY (Root Word) Why do we need to learn about affixes when our focus is poetry? In poetry, affixes help uncover the meanings of words. friend friendly unfriendly NOUN ADVERB ADJECTIVE TYPES OF AFFIXES Prefix Suffixes Infixes Circumfixes PREFIX Affixes added to the beginning of a root word. They usually change the meaning of the word but generally do not alter its grammatical category. Examples: Un + happy = Unhappy Re + do = Redo SUFFIXES Affixes added to the end of a root word. They often change the grammatical category or tense of the root word, such as turning a noun into an adjective or verb. Example: work → worked fox→ foxes Kim → Kim’s fast→ faster→ fastest INFIXES A special type of affix that comes in the middle of a word. However, the English language doesn’t use infixes. Infixes are more common in other languages including Greek etc. CIRCUMFIXES Pairs of prefixes and suffixes always used together. Example: en + light + en = enlighten un + reason + able = unreasonable
