EEC I GEL 105 LEARNER'S MODULE EC E English Enhancement Course Ms. Erica Danna P. Albindo 2024-2025 VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT Lesson 1 Affixes A grammatical element that is added to a root word to make new words and a new meaning Types of Affixes 1. Prefixes - a group of letters with special meaning appearing in front of a word 2. Suffixes - a group of letters with special meaning appearing at the end of a word MOST COMMON PREFIXES MOST COMMON SUFFIXES Context Clues Context clues are hints provided by the words and sentences surrounding the unfamiliar word. Most experienced readers try to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words through context clues. For example, a word you do know can help explain a word you don't, as in: That is a valid statement: I have no doubt that it is true. Valid - through the clues in this sentence- means true or correct. CLUE #1: SYNONYMS Synonyms - look for words that mean exactly or nearly the same as another word CLUE #2: ANTONYMS Antonyms - look for words that mean the opposite. CLUE #3: INFERENCE Inference - look for examples or evidence. CLUE #4: DESCRIPTION Description - look for phrases that describe or explain it further. Homonyms Some words sound the same but mean differently. They are called homonyms. Some examples are its, a pronoun, and it’s, the contracted form of it is. On the other hand, there are some words with multiple meanings due to the context of the sentence. Examples: You are right - means that person is correct Meena sat on the right - means that person is in the right side We are one of a kind - a group of people with similar characteristics Beena is very kind - being good, generous, helpful References: Valdez, J.
