U N D E R S T A N D I N G C U LT U R E , S O C I E T Y, A N D P O L I T WEEK 10: “Social Inequalities” Competency: * Explain government programs and initiatives in addressing social inequalities e.g. local, national, global SOCIAL INEQUALITY It is the existence of uneven opportunities and rewards for a diverse social positions or statuses within a group of society. It happens when resources, in whatever nature, are distributed unevenly in most NOTHING IS EQUAL societies. PROGRAMS: Conditional Cash Transfer Program a government program that provides conditional cash grants to the poorest of the poor in the Philippines. PROGRAMS: Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) the government addressed key national goals: the promotion of equity and social justice, food security and poverty PROGRAMS: SK Reform Act of 2015 A provisions that prohibits political dynasty. It prohibits any person to run in any Sanggunian Kabataan Office either elected or appointed if it has a relative up to second degree. PROGRAMS: Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act a law that institutionalizes free tuition and exemption from other fees in state universities and colleges (SUCs), local universities SOCIAL INEQUALITY Social Inequalities are correlated also to gender inequality (women and LGBT), ethnic minorities, racial inequality, and person with disabilities. RELEVANT ISSUES IN SOCIAL INEQUALITY 1.GENDER INEQUALITY - Job employment - Opportunities and privileges - Women and LGBTQA+ PROGRAMS: Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (PPGD) rests on a vision of development that is equitable, sustainable, free from violence, respectful of human rights, supportive of self-determination and the actualization of human potentials, and participatory and PROGRAMS: Magna Carta for Women (MCW) a comprehensive women’s human rights law that seeks to eliminate discrimination through the recognition, protection, fulfillment, and promotion of the rights of Filipino women, especially those belonging in the marginalized sectors of the society.
