ORAL COMMUNICATION Communication - sharing thoughts, exchange of ideas. Encoding - process of converting information, ideas or concepts into message. Decoding - interprenting the encoded message. Channel - medium or the means. Nature of Communication 1. Communication is a process. 2. Communication occurs between two or more people. (speaker and receiver) 3. Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words. Non-verbal actions or both spoken words and non-verbal actions at the same time. Elementa of Communication Communication in progress Sender/Speaker - delivers the message. Message - information, ideas or though conveyed by the speaker. Feedback - responses or information provided by the receiver. Context - environment where the communication takes place. Barrier - refers to the factors. Types of Speech Intrapersonal Communication - self talking. Interpersonal Communication - communication between and among people. Dyad or Dyadic Communication - occurs between two people. Small Group Communication - involves at least three but not more than 12 people. Public Communication - requires the speaker to deliver or send the message before or infront of a group. Mass Communication - takes place through television, radios, newspapers, magazine, so on and so forth. Mass - Whole country. Public - Audience. Types of Speech According to Purpose Informative Speech - provides information. Demonstrative Speech - demonstration on how to do the thing being taught, step-by-step. Persuasive Speech - convincing people. Entertainment Speech - speeches in birthday, wedding, etc. Types of Speech According to Delivery 1.Reading from a Manuscript - manuscript speaking is the word-for-word iteration of a written message. 2.Impromtu Speech - presentation of a short message without advance preparation. 3.Extemporaneous Speech - presentation of carefully planned and rehearsed speech. Types of Speech Styles SPEECH STYLE - form of language that speaker uses which categorized by the degree of formality is known as speech style. INTIMATE SPEECH STYLE - used in talks between two very close individuals. CASUAL SPEECH STYLE - usually used between friends or even insiders who have things to share. FORMAL SPEECH STYLE - used the formal settings and usually follows commonly accepted format. CONSULTATIVE SPEECH STYLE - semi-formal communicay, tend to be shorter and spontaneous and the speaker don’t usually plan what she wants to say. FROZEN SPEECH STYLE - fixed speech, this stye of communication rarely or never changes. It is frozen in time and content.
