The miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand is the only miracle that is recorded in all four Gospels. When an event is recorded in multiple Gospels, you will always want to read the different accounts to get the complete picture of the event. Read the following cross-references which record this event and match the statement with the correct reference. There may be more than one answer per statement. a. Matthew 14:13–21   b. Mark 6:33–44   c. Luke 9:12–17   d. John 6:1–14 b Jesus had compassion on the people because they were like sheep without a     shepherd. d The loaves and fish brought to Jesus were from a boy.     a There were women and children along with the five thousand men who ate.     d Jesus asked Philip where to buy bread in order to test him.     b, c The people were instructed to sit down in groups.     Read the following cross-references which all record the event of Jesus walking on water and match the statement with the correct reference. a. Matthew 14:22–33   b. Mark 6:45–52   c. John 6:15–21 b Jesus intended to pass them by when He was walking     on the water. a Jesus told Peter to come out of the boat, and Peter     walked on the water. b The disciples did not understand the miracle of the     loaves for their hearts were hardened. a Those in the boat worshiped Jesus saying, “You are the     Son of God.” c After Jesus got into the boat, it was immediately at the     land where they were going. 1. What does the sign of Jesus feeding the five thousand tell you about Him? AWV. Jesus demonstrates the power of God over His creation. As He provided for their physical needs, He is able to provide for their spiritual needs. This demonstrates His deity. 2. Why do you think Jesus walked on water after the miracle of feeding the five thousand and before He taught that He is the Bread of Life? (Hint: Matthew 14:33, Mark 6:52) AWV. The disciples did not yet understand how the sign/miracle of the loaves pointed to who Jesus is—the Creator and Sovereign Lord. Witnessing Him walk on water gave them a greater understanding of His deity. They then responded in worship. The Sea of Galilee on the eastern border was teeming with fish. Therefore, many coastal inhabitants made their living as fishermen. The seaside dwellers were also keenly aware of sudden and threatening tempests. Fierce storms such as described in Matthew 8:23–27 arose when cool, dry air came down from Upper Galilee and met the warm, moist air around the low-lying sea. • Westward from the sea lay the fertile plains of Lower Galilee to the south and the mountains to the north in Upper Galilee. The plains area was agricultural with a variety of fruit trees, as well as vineyards and olive groves. In addition, animals grazed the pastures and meadows. The bountiful land enabled many Galileans to accumulate wealth. Less prosperous Judean neighbors to the south envied the Galileans and, at the same time, disdained them for their language differences and more lax religious practices. Herod Antipas invested tremendous resources in rural Galilee to create the urban areas of Sepphoris in the plains and Tiberius on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. At the same time, the villages of Cana, Nazareth, and Nain continued to thrive in the fertile plains as did Bethsaida, Chorazin, Capernaum, and Magdala along the seashore. By studying ruins, archaeologists have confirmed the socioeconomic disparity between citizens of affluent Sepphoris and the village of Capernaum. They observed that the stones used in city houses were more consistently-sized and -shaped, while village houses in Capernaum were made of uneven boulders packed with mud, making them considerably less comfortable. History, geography, and archaeology give us insight into the everyday life of the Galileans. urban According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition: of, relating to, characteristic of, or constituting a city The Bible records many events related to Galilee. Read each statement and mark the correct answer. 1. Jesus pronounced woes on three Galilean cities for their unrepentance. Matthew 11:20–23   Matthew 18:7   Matthew 23:13 2. Jesus raised a widow’s son from the dead in this city (Luke 7:11–15). Capernaum   Tiberias   Nain 3. The blind man whom Jesus touched twice to heal was from this city (Mark 8:22–25). They saw His miraculous works, and yet, many of them did not truly believe. Read your study passage and mark the keyword seal/sealed. seal/sealed (John 6:27) Strong’s #: G4972     Greek word: sphragizō Strong’s Definition: to stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation (literally or figuratively); by implication, to keep secret, to attest Jesus has the authority to give the food that never perishes because God the Father has put His seal on Him. Look again at verse 27. 1. What did Jesus tell them not to work for? The food/meat that perishes/which perisheth/ that spoils 2. What kind of food would the Son of Man give them? The food that lasts for/endures to/ which endureth unto/endures to eternal/everlasting life Jesus’ statement in verse 27 is a double paradox. They could only get physical food through work (Gen. 3:19), and the spiritual food that endures to eternal life could only be given to them through faith (Eph. 2:8–9). 3. What did Jesus say was the work of God? That/to you/ye believe in/on Him/the one whom He has/hath sent. 4. Who did Jesus say He was in verse 35? The Bread of Life Then beginning in verse 48, Jesus presented to the people a very difficult teaching. 5. What did Jesus say the one who eats His flesh and drinks His blood has according to v. 54? Eternal life Eating is something we must do to live, and when food is consumed, it becomes a part of us. Jesus is not speaking of physical eating and drinking but of spiritually partaking and appropriating His atoning work on the cross. Jesus, the real spiritual Bread, sustains those who have believed in Him, ensuring they will never hunger or thirst again (v. 35). Those who have personally trusted in Him receive eternal life and will later be raised up at the last day. 6. What did some of the disciples say about this teaching of Jesus? AWV. This teaching is unpleasant/hard. Who can accept it? 7. What action did some of them take? AWV. Many of the followers left and no longer walked with Him. 8. What did Jesus then ask the twelve disciples (v. 67)? AWV. Do you also want to leave/go away? 9. Write out Simon Peter’s response. AWV. Write your theme for Unit 7. As the most common dietary staple in biblical times, the term “bread” referred to that which is necessary to sustain life. The people who ate the loaves remembered the time their forefathers ate manna, and they wanted Jesus to do a similar miracle. God taught His people about Himself through various object lessons which are referred to as types, shadows, or pictures. Just as a sign (miracle) pointed to the reality of who Jesus is, Old Testament types were given as instructions to look forward to a future reality fulfilled. Skim Exodus 16:1–36 and look up the following definition. manna According to Vine’s Dictionary of Expository Words Definition: the supernaturally provided   food   for Israel during their   wilderness   journey From the descriptions below, you will learn truths about Jesus Christ and manna, which is a type of Christ. The Body Broken for Us: 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 At Jesus’ last meal (the Last Supper) with His disciples, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it before giving it to the disciples. He told them that the bread represented His body. • He followed that action by similarly taking the cup, giving thanks, and asking them to drink of it. By looking at cross-references, we learn that the sacrifice of Jesus’ body, as well as the shedding of His blood, was part of God’s redemptive plan. Read the following statements and match the correct cross-reference to each one. b Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah     would heal our illnesses and diseases. a. Isaiah 52:14 b. Matthew 8:16–17 c     We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ. c. Hebrews 10:10 d. 1 Peter 2:24 a Jesus’ physical body was marred more than any     other man’s. d Jesus bore our sins in His body on the cross.     Isaiah gave a prophecy about Jesus’ death more than 700 years before it occurred. The other ordinance practiced in the Body of Christ is the receiving of Communion, sometimes called the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper has its roots in the Last Supper. Three of the gospels record that event (Matt. 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20), but it is Paul who writes the words most commonly used when we partake of the Lord’s Supper. Read 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 and answer the following questions. 1. Why are we to partake of the Lord’s Supper? In remembrance of Him 2. Is this ordinance to be done only once? No Give the reason for your answer. AWV. Paul used the words “as often/oft/whenever,” indicating no limit on the number of times. 3. What are we proclaiming by celebrating the Lord’s Supper? The Lord’s death until/til He comes Unit 7, Lesson 3 • Jesus, the True Bread 93 NAVI G AT E • U N IT 7 , L E S S O N 4 Apply | Study Passage: John 6:1–71 | Memory Passage: John 6:35–40 DISCOVERY DESTINATION Believe His Words and Abide in Him Read your study passage and mark the keywords draws/draw and remains/abides/dwelleth and the time phrase last day. draws/draw (John 6:44) • Strong’s #: G1670     Greek word: helkō Strong’s Definition: to drag (literally or figuratively) remains/abides/dwelleth (John 6:56) Strong’s #: G3306   Greek word: menō Strong’s Definition: to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) 1.
