Vocabulary **The Historical Jesus** - What we can know about Jesus through historical documents and research **Christ of Faith** - What we believe about Jesus through theology and faith **The Real Jesus** - Who Jesus **really** was. The goal is to study the HJ so that the CoF can match this as\ closely as possible (HJ+CoF). **Miracle** - A surprising and welcome event that cannot be explained by natural causes and is considered\ a work of Divine agency **Parable** - A simple story used to teach a moral or spiritual lesson. Earthly stories with a heavenly meaning **Incarnation** - the act by which the eternal Son of God took on the nature of humanity, through the virgin birth. **Kenosis** - Through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, God Himself gave up, or set aside, His divine attributes. **Synoptic Gospels** - The **gospels** of Matthew, Mark, and Luke present **similar narratives** of the **life of Jesus Christ.** **The Trinity -** The biblical view that there is one God in three distinct Persons and that each Person is\ equally and fully God. Three most famous parables: 1\. The four types of soil 2. The Good Samaritan 3. The Prodigal Son The story of Lazarus and the Rich Man might or might not be a parable: - - 4 types of miracles: 1. 2. 3. 4. The Four Gospels: 1\. Matthew - **Jewish** audience, many **parables**, fulfillment of **prophecy** 2\. Mark - **Roman** audience, action-packed (everything happens "immediately"), most like a **biography** 3\. Luke - written to **Theophilus**, eyewitness testimony, no "bad" Romans 4\. John - Not a Synoptic, **last** gospel written, more **theological** than others, includes the "I Am" quotes - Matthew Christmas account: - - - - - Luke Christmas account: - - - - - Jesus Five main ways Jesus knew and proved He was God: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The 7+ I Am statements 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Bonus: "Before Abraham was, I AM." John 8:48-59\ Bonus 2: "I Am the Alpha and the Omega." Revelation 1, Revelation 21 Five times people *clearly* **worship** Jesus in the gospels: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The Holy Spirit What does the Bible say about the Holy Spirit? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Seven reasons we need the Holy Spirit: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The Athanasian Creed - A statement of faith on the Trinity commonly accepted by most orthodox churches\ both today and throughout church history One God + 3 Distinct Persons + Each Equally and Fully God = The Trinity 3 Distinct Persons + Each Fully and Equally God - One God = Polytheism\ (what Muslims and some Jews accuse Christians of being) 1 God - 3 Distinct Persons +/- Each Fully and Equally God = Modalism\ (water analogy, "I am father, son, teacher" analogy) 1 God + 3 Distinct Persons - Each Fully and Equally God = Arianism (Sun, rays, heat analogy) 1 God + 3 Distinct Persons + Each is a part of God in His fullness = Partialism\ (Egg analogy, Apple Analogy, Voltron) Possible Essay Questions: Explain some of the differences between Matthew\'s and Luke's accounts of Jesus' birth. Can these\ differences be reconciled? How? What are your three primary gifts and what are some practical ways you can be using them for God with here\ and now? List four of the "controversial" gifts (healing, speaking in tongue, miracle, prophesy) of the Holy Spirit. Why do cessationists say they are not for today? Do\ you agree or disagree? Why? What are three major errors (heresies) people make when trying to explain the Trinity? Use an analogy to\ describe each.
