Even though he was older than Jesus, John recognized Christ’s deity when he said Jesus was superior because He existed prior to himself. Read chapter 1 and fill in the blanks to help you see the contrast between John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. John the Baptist Jesus Christ He was sent from God (v. 6). He was with God and was God in the beginning (v. 1). He was not the Light (v. 8). He was the true Light (v. 9). He was sent to witness about the Light (v. 7). He gives light to everyone in the world (v. 9). He was not worthy to untie the strap of Jesus’ sandal (v. 27). He ranks higher because He existed before John (vv. 15, 30). He is the Word who became He was a voice calling in flesh and dwelt among us. We beheld the wilderness , “Make straight the His glory as of the only Son from the way of the Lord” (v. 23). Father (v. 14). He baptized with water (v. 26). He baptizes with the Holy Spirit (v. 33). Time phrases in a passage are important to observe because they give us the answer as to when particular events occurred. The study passage covers four days in the life of John the Baptist, Jesus, and the disciples. Mark the time phrase the next day and write the number of the day on which the event occurred. Day 4 Jesus decided to go to Galilee where He found Philip, and He told Nathanael He saw him under the fig tree. Day 1 The Pharisees sent priests and Levites to inquire of John the Baptist. In fact, many circumstances in Jewish culture required the use of ritual baths. Preparation for priests to be ordained or to enter the Holy of Holies included using “mikvah.” Mikvah was also used for regular ritual cleansing and for purification from the defilement of touching a dead body or cleansing from leprosy. Because a mikvah with flowing water was the most desirable type, the river was the best place for John to baptize. mikvah • A mikvah According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition: a ritual bath or bathing place for purification in accordance with Jewish law Baptism is an ordinance of the Christian faith which has been practiced since the establishment of the church in the book of Acts. According to “Outline of Biblical Usage” on blueletterbible.org, after one has confessed his sins and professed his faith in Christ, having been born again by the Holy Spirit to a new life, he identifies publicly with Christ and the church by water baptism. ordinance According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition: 3. a prescribed usage, practice, or ceremony Read your study passage and mark the keyword baptize. Early church hymns were generally written by pastors whose love for God’s Word was evident not only in their sermons, but also in their music. It is imperative that contemporary songwriters and musicians have a solid knowledge of the Bible as a basis for their music. Meaningful hymns are great tools for pastors and worship leaders to teach theology while, at the same time, providing an avenue for believers to worship God in spirit and in truth. theology • According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition 1b: the study of God and of God’s doxology relation to the world According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition: a usually liturgical expression of praise to God Read each of the “Behold the Lamb of God” stanzas and chorus below and match its theology with the correct passage, using the highlighted words as clues. c We who walk in darkness deep Now see the light of morning The Mighty God, the Prince of Peace A child to us is born b Wanderers in the wilderness O hear a voice is crying Prepare the way, make straight the path Your King has come to die a. Unit 2, Lesson 5 • Jesus, the Lamb of God 27 History and Geography: Footprints of John the Baptist John the Baptist, whom Jesus said was the greatest man born to a woman, led an unusual life. His parents, Priest Zechariah and wife Elizabeth, lived in the hills of Judea about five miles southwest of Jerusalem. They had been an aged, childless couple. An angel unexpectedly appeared to Zechariah and announced that Elizabeth would have a son who was to be named John. When Zechariah responded in disbelief, the angel made him speechless until John’s birth (Luke 1:20). About six months later, in Nazareth of Galilee, an angel visited Mary, Elizabeth’s cousin. He told her she would be the mother of God’s Son, whom she would call “Jesus” (Luke 1:26–31). Mary traveled from her home to visit Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, she was filled with the Holy Spirit and John leaped in her womb (Luke 1:39–41). According to Luke 3:23, Jesus was about thirty years old when John the Baptist baptized Him near Bethany/Bethabara east of the Jordan River (John 1:28). Therefore, John was also about thirty years old. “Thirty years became among the Jews the perfect age at which a man attained to full maturity.”2 John, attired in skins and eating locusts and wild honey, went into the wilderness of Judea, a rugged strip of land west of the Dead Sea. There he preached a message of repentance (Matt. 3:1–6) and baptized people. Using information in the article above, complete the map work. 1. Draw a circle around the dot representing the approximate location of John the Baptist’s hometown. 2. Draw a house where Mary, the mother of Jesus, lived. 3.
