Unit 2 Determining Level of Response Assistance Lesson 1 Determining Level of Response Assistance Lesson Goal You will be able to determine the level of assistance needed in an emergency situation. Think About This Several inmates are fighting in the courtyard. Since Officer Allen is close to the fight, she tries to break up the fight, even though the number of inmates involved keeps increasing. What would you do? Determining the Level of Response Assistance ✅ CO821.1. Know the type and severity of an emergency to determine the level of assistance needed Try to identify the type of emergency, such as medical, fire, hazmat, or criminal act. The severity of an incident determines what type and level of response is needed, such as implementing the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) for sexual assault. Examine the facts, and practice good situ- ational awareness and officer safety. Do not engage in unsafe behavior when approaching a dangerous situation. For example, do not investigate a suspicious item by touching or smelling it. If an incident poses a security threat, respond to the threat appropriately and notify a supervisor. Emergencies can involve more than one type of incident. Inmates can intentionally create emer- gencies as distractions to accomplish other purposes. For example, inmates could use a fight as a distraction during an escape attempt or as a cover for other illegal acts. Request assistance if you could be overpowered in the situation. The level of threat determines the level of assistance. You should request assistance if a situation is not being resolved success- fully. Follow protocol and chain of command, and document the details of the emergency and any actions taken to resolve it. ✅ CO821.2. Know the location of equipment available for emergency response Each agency will have specific equipment for different emergency responses, such as different types of communication devices, vehicles, medical equipment, and fire equipment. You should know where needed equipment is located and maintain certifications for using equipment. 260 / Florida Basic Recruit Training Program (CO): Volume 1
