PHILIPPINE HISTORY SPANISH COLONIALIZATION A Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines Started the influence of the Spanish to the Philippines. Colonialization of the Spanish officially started in 1565 when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived. The Spanish started spreading their religion of Christianity. COLONIAL METHODS OF SPAIN FOLK CATHOLICISM - Spain allowed the native practices of the filipinos to be included with catholic practices - It was easy for spain to christianize them since the filipinos did not have a major religion. REDUCCION - Filipinos were forced to live “under the church bells.” Some Filipinos did not like this because they were far away from their livelihoods (ex. Fishing). OBSCURANTISM -The Spaniards promoted ignorance through education and the non-teaching of Spanish to the Filipinos. This led to a biased understanding POLO Y SERVICIO - Filipinos were forced to work without payment. They had to build bridges, buildings, churches, ships, etc. for months.. UNITED STATES COLONIALIZATION The Philippines experienced another form of colonialism through the United States. The US paid Spain 20 million dollars for the entirety of the Philippines after winning the Spanish-American war. COLONIAL METHODS OF THE US Sedition law of 1901 The filipinos were not allowed to do anything that may separate or independence from the us Brigandage Act of 1902 - Anyone who showed rebellion against the us will be treated as a brigand or traitor and will be publicly executed. Flag law of 1907 The Us did not allow any display of the Philippines flag or any symbol that will promote defiance against the US. Benevolen t Assimilatio n. -Pres. William Mckinley in 1898 declared that “The United States have come, not as invaders or conquerors, but as friends, to protect The filipinos are not capable of fighting the Spaniards with their swords when they have guns and if they talked bad about the Spaniards they would get executed. So the filipinos talked about their experiences with the Spaniards in a different way. PASSION OF CHRIST (Pasyon) The filipinos wrote their own version of the pasyon to show how the Spaniards treated them which they portrayed THE Jesus as the victim. FILIPINO’S KUNDIMAN RESPONSE - Kundiman is a song that is usually sad. Filipinos used this to talk about the things the Spanish does to them. SUMUROY REVOLT - Was led by Agustin Sumuroy, he rebelled against polo y servicio in the shipyards of cavite. DAGOHOY REVOLT - Longest revolt in history (85 years), he started the revolt because the Spanish did not let his brother get a Christian burial. SILANG REVOLT - Was led by Diego Silang, this revolt is a response to the application of tribute and bandala. - Was later then replaced by his wife, Gabriela Silang when he died. > PONCIANO ELOFRE - He wanted to restore animism and pagan back in to the Philippines. GOMBURZA - They fought for Filipino priests to get their own parishes and to expel the Spanish friars. PROPAGANDA MOVEMENT ( La Liga Filipina) - A group of filipinos that wanted to reform the Philippines. They wanted the Philippines to be a province of Spain, and wanted filipinos to be fellow equals of the Spanish. - LA SOLIDARIDAD / DIARIONG TAGALOG / KALAYAAN - Articles/ newspapers published by the progpaganda movement, these articles/ or newspapers were neutral but still exposed the harsh treatment of the Spaniards. - NOLI ME TANGERE / EL FILIBUSTERISMO - Novels made by Jose Rizal. These novels exposed corruption and how the Spaniards treated the Filipinos. - KATIPUNAN A secret organization that fought for the filipinos freedom against the Spanish. Was led by Andres Bonifacio, he believed that propagandism is no longer working and that a violent solution was needed.
