Summary

This document is a scientific review, likely notes from a lesson, on the 3rd unit of a science course. It covers fundamental concepts of elements and compounds, properties of matter (extensive and intensive), physical and chemical changes, types of matter and phase transitions.

**                         SCIENCE REVIEWER** **                          3RD UNIT BY: DERO CUBITA** - Element is a pure substance that is made up of only one kind of atom - Compound is a combination of two or more elements - Property is an observable characteristic that describes an object or a substance - Physical Properties are characteristics of matter that may be observed or measured without changing the chemical composition of a substance - Extensive Properties is an properties of matter that depend on the amount of matter. - Volume, mass, size, weight, and length are extensive properties. - Intensive Properties do not depend on the amount of matter present - Physical Change are observable changes in the appearance or physical property of matter while it does not change into a new substance. - Chemical Change involves chemical reaction that result  - Chemical Property is the ability of a substance to undergo chemical changes to become different kind of matter. - Flammability are usually in liquid and gaseous forms are those that can easily catch fire at relatively low temperatures. - Volatility is the tendency of a liquid to vaporize. - Rusting is caused by the chemical reaction between the metal and the moisture in the air. - Water is one of the basic needs of living things 75% of our planet is covered with water. - Ice can change to water or water vapor - Water can change to ice or water vapor. - Their characteristics are physically affected by the motion of the molecules and their intermolecular attractions. - Solid is a phase of matter that has a definite volume and a distinct shape given a certain temperature - Liquid is a phase of matter that has a definite volume, but it takes the shape of its container due to gravity. - Gas is dependent on its temperature and surrounding pressure. It affected by the gravity, the gas will take the shape of the container, but its molecules will spread out into the environment. - When gas particles gain energy through heating at very high temperature or when they absorb electrical energy, another phase of matter is formed also known as plasma. - The Bose-Einstein condensate is considered to be the exact opposite of plasma. - Phase change is a type of reversible physical change that makes the phase of matter change due to absorption or the release of heat. - Melting is a process by which a substance in the solid phase turns into the liquid phase. - Solidification: This happens when a liquid is cooled to a lower temperature called its freezing point - Vaporization iS the process by which liquid turns into a gas. - Condensation is a process by which a gas turns into a liquid. - Sublimation is a process by which a solid turns directly into a gas. - Freeze-drying is a process in which food is frozen and placed in a very sealed and vacuum packed container. - The phase diagram is a graphical representation that shows different changes in the phase of a substance and the conditions of temperature and pressure in wherein each phase would remain as solid, liquid, or gas. - The critical point of a substance is the temperature at and above in which the vapor of the substance cannot be liquefied no matter how much pressure is applied.
