9 UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS REVIEW ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) Intro ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) The Context, Content, Processes and Consequences of Socialization OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to: Define and identify the different types of groups in society. Explain the role of social groups in shaping identities of individual person. SOCIALIZATION Socialization is learning on how our society and specific communities or group works, so we can be a part of them. It’s a process of working together in developing responsibility in our community. Individual learns to conform to the norms and values in a group and develops his own self by learning and knowing about his/her own self from others. Socialization focuses on the following: 1.Acquisition of knowledge 2.Language 3.Values 4.Habits 5.Skills in the Society TYPES OF SOCIALIZATION Types of Socialization 1. Primary socialization 2. Secondary socialization 3. Developmental socialization 4. Anticipatory socialization 5. Resocialization Consequences of Socialization - Establishes self-concepts for role taking - Creates the capacity - Creates the tendency for people to act in socially acceptable ways. - Makes people bearers of culture. Goals of Socialization a. Impulse control and development of a conscience. b. Roles preparation and performance including occupational rules, gender roles, and roles in institutions such as marriage and parenthood. c. The cultivation of sources of meaning, or what is important, values, and to be lived for. Group Is a set of individuals who identify and interact with one another in a structured way based on shared values and goals. Social Group It is a collection of people who interact with each other in accordance with the position they occupy in the society. Society with the group of individuals Social Organization Established for the pursuit of specific aims or goals, characterized by a formal structure or rules, authority relations, a division of labor and limited membership or admission. Types of Social Groups 1. According to Social Ties 2. According to Self-identification 3. According to form of organization 4. Networks According to Social Ties 1. Primary group – a small, intimate, and less specialized group whereby members engaged in emotion-based interaction and interdependence over an extended period of time 2. Secondary group – a larger, less intimate and more specialized group whereby members engaged in objective-oriented relationships for a limited period of time. According to Self-Identification 3. In-group - a group to which a person belongs, and with which he or she feels sense of identity. An out-group meanwhile, is a group to which one does not belong and to which he or she may feel hostility. 4. Out group- is when one does not identify with similar or another group because of his/her in group. 5. Reference group – a group which has a strong influence on an individual’s, beliefs, values, behavior and attitude. According to Form of Organization 6. Formal Group–Have a certain type of administrative structure called “bureaucracy”. Bureaucracy A hierarchical arrangement in a large-scale organization in which parts of the organization are ordered in the manner of a pyramid based on a division of function and authority According to Form of Organization 7. Informal Group–Has no explicit rules and does not have specific objectives to be attained. It has the characteristics of primary groups. Networks (link or connection) are defined as sets of informal and formal social ties that link people to each other. It is formed by the presence of social linkage for some personal, economic, religious, or political reasons. Networks The social actors within a network might be people, families, organizations, corporations, states, or a mixture of individuals and groups. PERFORMANCE TASK Group 1: Social Group Mapping Instructions 1) In groups, you will identify various social groups you belong to and create a map that shows your relationships and characteristics. 2) Your group will present your social group map to the class. 3) Discuss as a class how these groups contribute to individual identities. Rubric - Clarity of group representation - 10 pts. - Depth of analysis of group characteristics - 10 pts. - Quality of presentation - 10 pts. Assessment Questions: 1) What types of social groups did you identify in your map? 2) How do these groups impact your identity? 3) Can you provide an example of how a specific social group has influenced your life? PERFORMANCE TASK Group 2: Group Role Analysis (https://youtu.be/EN3y7ELbVzg) Instructions - 1) You will watch assigned case studies about different social groups. 2) You will discuss the role of the group and how it shapes individual identities. 3) Your group will share their findings with the class. PERFORMANCE TASK Group 3: Identity Stories Instructions - 1) Share a brief story about a social group you belong to. 2) You will reflect on how that group influences your identity. 3) Facilitate a discussion on common themes and differences in your experiences.
