WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTALISM? A political and ethical movement that seeks to improve and protect the quality of the natural environment through changes to environmentally harmful human activities; through the adoption of forms of political, economic, and social organization that are thought to be necessary for, or at least conducive to, the benign treatment of the environment by humans; and through a reassessment of humanity’s relationship with nature. In various ways, environmentalism claims that living things other than humans, and the natural environment as a whole, are deserving of consideration in reasoning about the morality of political, economic, and social policies. EXAMPLES : The Department of Environmental Studies publishes a range of information on environmentalism and ecology. The party is not green in its political outlook and is suspicious of environmentalism. Over the course of the year, air pollution has become particularly problematic in the Philippines. Going by World Health Organization’s (WHO) health and environment scorecard, the country records an annual mean of 24 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³) for fine particulate matter, significantly surpassing the recommended maximum level of 5 µg/m³. For the most part, air pollution in the Philippines stems from the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil. Considering that 53% of the population is without access to clean fuels and technology for cooking, this is bound to further exacerbate air quality in the long run. Air pollution in the Philippines is also caused by vehicular emissions, particularly in areas like Metro Manila. In 2022, other recorded surges in air pollution outside Metro Manila include the San Fernando City Station in Pampanga, Antipolo City Station, Biñan City Station, Puerto Princesa City Station, and the Davao City Station. ROOTS OF ENVIRONMENTALISM The roots of environmentalism can be traced back to the 19th century, with thinkers like Henry David Thoreau and John Muir advocating for the preservation of nature. However, the modern environmental movement gained momentum in the mid-20th century driven by several factors : Increased awareness of pollution: The rise of industrialization and urbanization led to widespread pollution, particularly in cities. Scientific evidence of environmental damage: Scientific research began to reveal the harmful impacts of human activities on the environment, such as the effects of pesticides and the depletion of the ozone layer. Growth of the conservation movement: Organizations and individuals dedicated to protecting natural resources and wildlife gained prominence. IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTALISM Environmentalism has had a significant impact on shaping public policy and influencing individual behavior. It has contributed to: The establishment of environmental regulations: Governments at all levels have enacted laws and regulations to protect the environment, such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. The creation of environmental organizations: Countless organizations, both national and international, work to protect the environment through advocacy, research, and conservation efforts. Increased public awareness and activism: Environmentalism has raised public awareness of environmental issues and inspired millions of people to take action to protect the environment. CHALLENGES OF ENVIRONMENTALISM Despite its achievements, environmentalism faces significant challenges: Climate change denial: Some individuals and groups continue to deny the scientific consensus on climate change, hindering efforts to address the issue. Economic interests: Powerful economic interests often oppose environmental regulations, arguing that they harm economic growth. Political polarization: Environmental issues have become increasingly politicized, making it difficult to reach consensus on solutions. FATHER OF ENVIRONMENTALISM Alexander von Humboldt is known as the father of environmentalism for his pioneering work in the late 1800s. He spent five years on a scientific trip to Latin America, where he made important measurements. of environmental conditions. Humboldt was one of the first to promote a unified view of nature, emphasizing the relationship between climate, plants, animals and human activities. His work promoted the concept of the Earth as an organic whole and advocated a sustainable interaction between humans and nature. Humboldt's ideas influenced disciplines such as biology and ecology and continue to Born : September 14, 1769 Berlin, influence conservation today.. Germany Died : May 6, 1859 Berlin, Germany
