(Evolved) - It is different than other sports because of its skill and discipline and it includes the totality. (Physical, Mental, Emotional, Social, Spiritual.) - TAE – Foot - KWON – Hand or Fist - DO – art or way Taekwondo - It is an art of self-defense that includes punches, kicks, blocks, and strikes with bare hands and feet. First practiced in 50 BCE (2300 years ago), during the period of three Kingdoms… Koguryo, Silla, and Baekje. It can be traced to the art of Tae Kwon. First practiced in Koguryo (It was prominent in Koguryo). Silla developed and spread the art. In 1955(given the name) signaled the beginning of Taekwon-Do as a formally recognized art in Korea. First development. Recreational Activity – rules can be changed. Sport – rules cannot be changed. Taekwondo was admitted to the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport during 1988 Seoul Olympics and 1992 Barcelona Olympic became official since Sydney Games of 2000 on January 31, 2015, Taekwondo was confirmed as an official sport of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic games. (Paralympics are for the disabled.) Moral values are inculcated. World Taekwondo (WT) formerly known as World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). WT is the latest and their vision is “Taekwondo for all”. - Composed of 208 national governing bodies as of 2017 - If you are not part of World Taekwondo, you are not allowed to compete. You must register at WT as a club/organization. THE WT recognize international competitions ( 5 )  World Taekwondo Championships  World Poomsae Championships  Women’s World Poomsae Championships  World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships  World Junior a Taekwondo  Philippine Taekwondo Association - Taekwondo was introduced in the Philippines by a Korean expert who was invited by the Philippine Government to demonstrate martial art in 1970. - Global cinematic exposure provided the path for the proliferation of Taekwondo in the Philippines. - Because of its Beauty and Elegance Taekwindo headsquarters was established in Makati during the 1st Asian Taekwondo Championships in 1974 (Seoul Korea) - 1976 when World Taekwondo sent one of its best international Sung Chon Hung in the Philippines. To be the chief instructor and vice-president of Local Association. He formed PTA. Philippine Taekwondo Association - PTA has more than 500,000 members. - Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) PTA VISION The PTA perceives a nation with dynamic citizenry through the influence and motivation of Taekwondo as a martial arts, science and sport. PTA PURPOSE To contribute to the development of our people by imploring values, enhancing their skills through constant practice, and living the spirit of the martial art through the psychology of sports. To gain honor for the Philippines through international competitions while acting as ambassadors of friendship and goodwill. (5) JIN Tenets of Taekwondo Self-confidence – when he believes in his own abilities. - Constant study, training and practice. - True self-confidence is based on ones knowledge about one’s self and abilities. Modesty – a modest person has humble opinion of ones self and achievements - Control desire for his own excellence - Helps create an atmosphere that makes it possible for people to get along together. - Acknowledgement of the other person and acceptance. Indomitable spirit – Not easily discouraged/defeated - Require inner reflection. - Prudence, closely related. - What is right or wrong, situational. Positive = continue, negative=stop. Perseverance – takes step necessary to achieve the goal he has set for himself - Ability to finish what one has decided and set out to do. Etiquette – form of conduct or behavior prescribed by custom or authority. - Manners of acting correctly. - (to be observed in social , official , and professional life ) - indespensible part of virtues of courtesy , self-control and the cardinal virtue of justice TAEKWONDO TRAINING PROGRA Poomsae (Forms) - Series of offensive and defensive movements. - Practiced against an imaginary opponent. Training Program > start from basic then > slowly to complex. Benefits: - Increase breathing control, flexibility and balance. - Build stronger muscles, ligaments and tendons. - Familiarizes the student w/ the different: a. Foot, hand and body movement. b. Types of power, staying power and burst of power. - Allows a fuller range of movements. - Develops self-confidence, and mental courage. - Is a good physical conditioner. Kyorugi (Sparring) – Actual fight between two competitors, offensive and defensive. - For yellow belts above 3 types of kyorugi or sparring: 1. Pre-arranged sparring (Demonstration) – spar using predetermined set of movements. o usually self-defense movement (can be grouped into one-step self-defense to three -step self-defense ) 2. Free sparring – right time to experiment/try out techniques. o Light blows o Controlled or practice sparring in preparation for actual competitions 3. Competitive sparring – type od sparring using skillful techniques and strategies practiced o Organized by WT competition rules Kyukpa (Breaking) - A way of gounging precision of kicks and power of techniques by breaking a solid object such as board or brick. - Skill learned and practiced by more advanced players
