Communication models are systematic representations of the process which help in understanding how communication is done. The models show the process metaphorically and in symbols. They form general perspectives on communication by breaking communication from complex to simple and keeps the components in order. Communication models can sometimes encourage traditional thinking and stereotyping but can also omit some major aspects of human communication. In this module, you will classify various models of communication and differentiate their scholarly work. Further, this material also includes individual activities that will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the models of communication. Enjoy your journey! TARGET At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: 1. identify the models of communication; and 2. differentiate the various models of communication. EN11/12OC-Ia-3 Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) 2 TRY THIS Directions: Read the given situation and answer the questions that follow. Write your answer in your Oral Communication activity notebook. Alarmed of the dengue cases in the municipality, Dr. Ma. Luisa L. Asong, Principal III of Lemery National High School, wrote an office memorandum to her head teachers and subject coordinators to come for a conference in her office at exactly 8:30 in the morning. That is for them to plan about the school’s preparation on the early prevention of the said health threat. After the concerned persons had read and signed the letter, they immediately went to the principal’s office. 1. Who is the receiver of the message sent by Dr. Ma. Luisa L. Asong? A. all teachers C. head teachers and subject coordinators B. faculty and staff D. teachers and the subject coordinators 2. What medium of communication was used by the sender in the given situation? A. letter B. mind C. secretary D. smartphone 3. How did you know that the message was clearly understood by the receiver? A. They read and signed the letter. B. They immediately went to the principal’s office. C. They read it carefully before signing the letter. D. They surely understood it because they are all teachers. 4. What makes the communication linear? A. It is a linear because the receiver does not need to give feedback. B. It is a linear because the receiver truly gives immediate response. C. It is a linear because the receiver needs not to process the message. D. It is a linear because the receiver really understands the message well. 5. The following are example of linear communication EXCEPT ____________. A. listening to a radio C. conversing via telephone B. reading a newspaper D. watching television Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) 3 DO THIS Activity 1. WHICH IS WHICH! Directions: Read the two situations below to identify the types of communication and their differences from one another. Then in your Oral Communication activity notebook, answer the questions that follow. Situation 1: Diether is a senior high school graduate and he wanted to apply for a job. While he was strolling around the street, he was given a flyer about an opening job in a department store. After reading the details, he left the area immediately. Situation 2: Lorraine went to Kamalig sa Balud, a restaurant at Brgy, Tabunan, Lemery, Iloilo. When she entered the place, the waitress welcomed her and catered her on her table. Then, she presented the menu book to Lorraine. After a few minutes, the waitress asked for her order. Lorraine told the waitress what she wanted for her lunch. The waitress repeated her orders and asked her again if there’s anything she wanted more. Lorraine shook her head and gave her a smile. Questions: 1. Which of the two situations presents a linear communication? 2. Which one presents a transactional communication? 3. Which situation lacks feedback? 4. Which situation has a feedback? 5. Which situation presents five elements only? Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) 4 EXPLORE E You are amazingly doing well! It’s nice to know that you really took your time to read and carefully answer the activities. But there’s more! Be ready to answer the questions in your next tasks. Direction: In your activity notebook, answer the given questions: 1. Based on the given example, what is a linear communication? How about transactional or two-way process communication? 2. How does the process of communication occur in situation number 1? How about in situation number 2? 3. How do the two types of communication differ from one another? KEEP THIS IN MIND Communication takes a big part in your daily activities. Today, communication varies in many ways through the help of technology. You can get updates of what is happening around the world even if you are just at home. However, it is important for you to know how communication is carefully used based on different situations. So find out how the model of communication is useful to improve your communication skill. Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) 5 There are varieties of communication models by which the process can be understood. Models of Communication A. Linear Communication Model – is considered as a one-way process where the sender is the only source of the message and the receiver doesn’t give feedback or response. The message signal is encoded and transmitted through a channel with the presence of noise. The sender is more prominent in a linear model of communication. Types of Linear Communication Model 1. Shannon-Weaver Model1 Source of Transmitter _ Channel ___ Receiver __ Destination Information (Encoder) (Decoder) Sent Received Message Signal Signal Message Noise Source The Shannon-Weaver model (1949) depicts communication as linear or one-way process. It is also known as the mother of all communication models. It consists of five elements namely: source (producer of message); transmitter (encoder of message into signals); channel (signals adapted for transmission); receiver (decoder of message from the signal); and destination. However, this communication model lacks one essential element in the communication process which is feedback. Without feedback, the speaker cannot know whether the receiver understands the message or not. 1 Sis Michelle, “Shannon and Weaver's Model of Communication,” Shannon and Weaver's Model of Communication, January 1, 1970, accessed August 18, 2020. https://michellemathiasfsp. blogspot.com /2018 /11/shannon-and-weavers-model-of.html. Lasswell’s Communication Model2 WHO (Sender) SAYS WHAT (Message) CHANNEL (Medium) TO WHOM (Receiver) WITH WHAT EFFECT (Feedback) This model was developed by communication theorist Harold D. Lasswell (1902-1978) in 1948. His model of communication is also known as action model, linear model or one way model of communication and is regarded as the most influential communication model. 3. Aristotle’s Model of Communication3 (before 300 BC) Speaker Speech Audience Effect Occasion The first and earliest linear model is that of Aristotle, who was a teacher of Rhetoric and even put up an academy to produce good speakers. 2 Shraddha Bajracharya, “Lasswell's Communication Model,” Businesstopia, February 15, 2018, https://www.businesstopia.net/communication/lasswell-communication-model. 3 http:www.uri.edu/personal/yanma/544/models.html Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication 3. He described the factors affecting the individual components in the communication which makes the communication more efficient. This model also focuses on the encoding and decoding which happens before the sender sends the message and before the receiver receives the message respectively. 5. Here, both “sender” and “receiver” are known as “communicators” and their role reverses each time in the communication process as both processes of sending and receiving occurs at the same time. Example of this is the Barlund’s Model of Communication. 6. Barlund’s Model6 Dean Barlund proposed a transactional model of communication in 1970 for the basic interpersonal communication which articulates that sending and receiving of messages happens simultaneously between people which popularly known as Barlund’s transactional Model of Communication. The Model has been further adapted and reformed by other theorists as general transaction Model. This model shifted from the trend of linear model to dynamic and two-way communication. 7. Interactive Model7 6 https://www.businesstopia.net/communication/barnlund-transactional-model-communication 7https://www.slideshare.net/judyanntulao/models-of-communication-63898369 Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models 9 of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) Interactive Model also known as convergence model deals with exchange of ideas and messages taking place both ways from sender and receiver and vice-versa. The communication process take place between humans or machines in both verbal and non-verbal way. This is a relatively new model of communication for new technologies like web. Below is an example of Interactive Model. 8. Schramm’s Model8 (1954) Wilbur Schramm is considered the father of mass communication. He asserts that communication can take place if and only if there is an overlap between the Field of Experience of the Speaker and the Field of Experience of the Listener. Field of Experience are the things that influence the understanding and interpretation of message like culture, social background, beliefs, experiences, values, and rules. 8 “Communication in Business Environment - Lessons - Tes Teach,” Tes Teach with Blendspace, accessed August 18, 2020, https://www.tes.com/lessons/ELQ4kvi402w8YA/communication-in- business-environment. Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Differentiates the various models of communication (CS_EN11/12OC-Ia-3) 10 SUM UP You are almost done with this module. You have learned about communication and differentiated its various models such as linear, transactional and interactive. Now, let’s recap the important things about the lesson. Communication is a process of understanding and sharing meaning. This is done using the different models of communication such as linear model, interactive model and transactional model. Linear communication model is considered as a one-way process where the sender is the only source of the message and the receiver doesn’t give feedback or response. The message signal is encoded and transmitted through a channel with the presence of a noise. Transactional Model of communication is the exchange of messages between the sender and the receiver where each take turns to send or receive messages. Interactive Model deals with the exchange of ideas and messages which takes place in both ways-from the sender to the receiver and vice-versa. The communication process takes place between human to human interaction or human to machine in both verbal and non-verbal types of communication.
