NUR1 222 STRENGTHS-BASED NURSING & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MARIA DI FEO NOVEMBER 16, 2023 #1 RESEARCH IN NURSING & LIFELONG LEARNING OUTLINE ¡ Research in Nursing ¡ Lifelong Learning ¡ Healthy Work Environments (PPT Part 2) ¡ Respectful Work Environments (PPT Part 2) ¡ Self-Care in Nursing Practice (PPT Part 2) NURSING STUDENTS/NURSES IN CLINICAL SETTINGS USE THEIR SENSES: Nursing students/nurses in clinical settings use their senses to make observations/gather information which helps them understand their environment (the patient, the clinical situation and other people that are part of the environment) as well as knowing and understanding themselves. Nursing students/nurses in clinical settings use their senses to make observations and gather information to assist them in understanding their patients and their clinical situation and their environment. Senses assist nursing students in knowing and understanding their patients, their clinical situation, their environment & knowing and understanding ourselves. Nursing students/nurses in clinical settings use their senses to understand the patient and his clinical situation. READ FEEDBACK NURSING & RESEARCH ¡ Nursing Profession has obligation to generate nursing knowledge ¡ In 1970 the National Commission for the Study of Nursing and Nursing Education reported: Nursing holds the responsibility for generating its’ own body of knowledge, and that the advancement of nursing practice requires nursing research. ¡ As a professional discipline we have an obligation NURSING KNOWLEDGE to generate nursing knowledge which will define and guide our practice. ¡ Nursing knowledge is the foundation for practice, research and education. ¡ Nursing identifies itself as a professional discipline with a scientific body of knowledge unique to its profession. Conduct Conduct Research – studies • Generate Knowledge Disseminate Disseminate Knowledge – Publish • Improve Practice – Improve Care ISON NURSE RESEARCHERS PROF. ANTONIA ARNAERT Prof. Arnaert’s research is focused on the transformation of healthcare delivery and education through technology and support of the digital health ecosystem. PROF. GUILLAUME FONTAINE Prof. Fontaine’s interests are in: Implementation research to support the adoption, penetration, and sustainability of evidencebased interventions, practices, programs, and policies within healthcare systems. Application of digital technology in healthcare to enhance patient care and public health …. PROF. CHRISTINE MAHEU Prof. Maheu’s research is focused on cancer survivorship care with special interests in psychosocial oncology clinical interventions. PROF. CÉLINE GÉLINAS Her past experience as a nurse in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) has inspired her to develop research in critical care and pain. She has developed and validated pain assessment tools (e.g. Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool [CPOT], Faces Pain Thermometer) which are being used for clinical or research purposes in North America or being translated into foreign languages. PROF. FRANCO CARNEVALE Prof. Carnevale's principal areas of research include: pediatric ethics, the experience of critically ill children and their families, and childhood disability. PROF. ANDRAEA VAN HULST . Prof. Van Hulst’s research interest is on chronic diseases and associated lifestyle behaviours in children and adolescents. PROF. CARMEN G. LOISELLE Pr.of Loiselle conducts research on how to best support individuals affected by cancer using connected health technologies. PROF. SYLVIE LAMBERT Prof. Lambert’s research interest is the emotional and physical well-being in patients with cancer and their family caregivers. ¡ Research Informs Nursing NURSES & RESEARCH Practice ¡ Nursing Research & Research from other Disciplines COMMON TYPES OF RESEARCH Qualitative Research • The investigation of phenomena through a collection of narrative materials • Understanding the human condition – lived experiences… • Data that is analysed and presented is non-numerical and involves techniques such as interviews and observations Quantitative Research • The study of phenomena that involves precise measurement and quantification • Data that is analyzed and presented is statistical, mathematical Mixed Methods • Combination of both EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE GATHERING, ASSESSING AND USING INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE FOR EVIDENCE-INFORMED NURSING COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS: PROFS. A. CHEVRIER, M. DI FEO, L.N. GOTTLIEB & A.M. LANCTÔT WHY DO WE IMPLEMENT EBNP? Improved patient care Improved patient outcomes LEVELS OF EVIDENCE PYRAMID COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS: PROFS. A. CHEVRIER, M. DI FEO, L.N. GOTTLIEB & A.M. LANCTÔT COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS: PROFS. A. CHEVRIER, M. DI FEO, L.N. GOTTLIEB & A.M. LANCTÔT CRITICALLY APPRAISING STUDIES ¡ Determine if studies relevant, valid, reliable, and applicable to the clinical question ¡ CRAAP test ¡ Team of nurses want to BEFORE CHANGING PRACTICE… implement an early mobility program for patients on ventilators. Before beginning such a marked change in clinical practice, the team reviewed and critically appraises the literature. KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION ¡ CIHR defines KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION as “a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethicallysound application of knowledge to improve the health of Canadians, provide more effective health services and products and strengthen the health care system.” ¡ https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/40948.html ¡ The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is Canada's federal funding agency for health research. Composed of 13 Institutes, we collaborate with partners and researchers to support the discoveries and innovations that improve our health and strengthen our health care system. KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION AT ISON ¡ KT projects may involve the adoption of new nursing practices or care processes (e.g., implementation of nursing best-practice guidelines), as well as the evaluation and improvement of existing nursing care practices or service delivery (e.g., quality improvement initiatives). IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE ¡ “Implementation science is the scientific study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings and other EBPs into routine practice to improve the quality and effectiveness of health services and care”. Eccles, M., & Mittman, B. (2006). Welcome to implementation science. Implementation Science, 1(1), 1–3. https://doi.org/10.1186/1748-5908-1-1 IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE ¡ Address problem of non-adoption of evidence-based clinical innovations in practice ¡ Process of Change - How does change take place ¡ Identify factors that affect the uptake of clinical innovations into routine use ¡ Implementation trials focus on testing strategies with the goal of increasing uptake and sustainability of the clinical innovation ¡ Need for Implementation nurse scientists ¡ Evaluate outcomes specific to implementation efforts LIFELONG LEARNING – ESSENTIAL ¡ Continuing Education (Workshops, Conferences, Courses..) ¡ Reading Scientific Articles PROFESSIONAL NURSING ASSOCIATIONS Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses Community Health Nurses of Canada Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology Canadian Nurses Association Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses CANADIAN NURSING ASSOCIATION (CNA) CERTIFICATIONS CNA certification is a nationally recognized nursing specialty credential for nurses. The CNA Certification Program consists of 22 nursing practice specialties. ¡ Examples: • Certified Nurse in Critical Care Canada • Emergency Nurse Certified Canada • Gerontological Nurse Certified Canada • Certified in Neonatal Nursing Canada ¡ https://www.cna-aiic.ca/en/certification/about-certification
