Nonverbal Communication—Communication other than words that creates meaning for someone Nonverbal communication involves all those nonverbal stimuli that are generated by both the communicator and the use of the environment, and that have potential message value for the communicator(s). As much as 65% of the way we convey meaning is through nv cues ex. “Oh really” “You love me” “I have something to tell you” FUNCTIONS OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION -Substitute -Complement (match) -Contradict -Repeat -Regulate -Accent NATURE OF NV -culture-bound-NV cues reflect culture and can vary from culture to culture -rule-governed (Expectancy Violations Theory-Burgoon) *When an expectancy is violated, we either match the behavior of the violator (if it is a high-reward violator) or seek to change the behavior of the violator (if it is a low-reward violator). Usually, we will first try to change the behavior with a nonverbal cue. If that doesn’t work, we’ll use a verbal cue. -ambiguous- A nv cue might not mean what you think it means -continuous- NV comm can continue after verbal comm has ended -multi-channeled- We can comm with our eyes, hands, posture, and tone all at the same time TYPES OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION -appearance (credibility, attractiveness, interests) -kinesics (movement, gestures, and posture--liking, warmth, credibility, interest, attitudes, status) -eye contact (trustworthiness, sincerity, honesty, interest) -facial expressions (reveal thoughts, express emotions and interest) -haptics (touch—intimacy, affection, rejection, power) -paralanguage/vocalics (tone, pitch, volume—emotion, clarify meaning) -silence (time to think, silent treatment, personal anxiety, to prevent communication, defiance, love, nothing to say) -Chronemics (time—power, status, interest) *monochronic- time is a commodity; prioritizes schedules *polychronic- time should be flexible; prioritizes relationships and relational harmony -proxemics (personal and environmental space—status, power, intimacy, liking)
