Categories of Nonverbal Communication continuation of the topic about Nonverbal Communication Today's Agenda 1 identify the different Categories of Nonverbal Communication Analyze what system does each of the category of NVC belong Let's begin! Are you ready? Introduction According to Allan Pease (1987), somebody is PERCEPTIVE or INTUITIVE if he/she has the ability to read another person's nonverbal cues. A person can become more Chloe perceptive by studying the different Tomas categories that you can use in transmitting and interpreting a nonverbal message. Facial Expressions the brow and the forehead - arrangement of facial muscles to 1 communicate emotional states or reactions to messages the eyes, eyelids, and the root of the 2 nose - three sets of muscles that are manipulated to form facial expressions the cheeks, mouth, remainder of the 3 nose, and chin - mirrors your thoughts and feelings - the face is the most visible part of your this one! body. Kinesics and body movement CONVENTIONAL GESTURES (with The study of body movements, including such 1 specific meanings assigned by phenomena as gestures, posture, facial expression, custom/culture) eye behavior, and rate of walk is called KINESICS. DESCRIPTIVE GESTURES (describes GESTURES are purposive movement of the head, 2 the idea being communicated like arms, or other areas of the body. They support or gesturing to depict size or shape) illustrate your ideas. INDICATORS (movements of the Effective gestures should be natural and relaxed, 3 hands, arms or other parts of the done with vigor and definiteness, and coordinated or body expressing feelings) done with proper timing. MOVEMENT and STANCE include shifts you make this from one spot to another while talking. one! POSTURE refers to the relative relaxation or rigidity of the body, as well as overall stance. Eye Behavior "Eyes are the window to the soul." The romanticist speaks of the eyes as 1 the most expressive part of our entire body. ""The eyes never lie." 2 The sage emphasizes the eyes as the most deeply sincere communicator of all our five senses. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." 3 A couple of bible verses assert that the eyes are probably the most sensitive and powerful of all human organs. Attitudes and emotions of others can this one! be read in the language of their eyes. Physical appearance includes everything about you, "from the top of your head to the soles of your feet." the first nonverbal factor to come into play during a relationship large in scope and includes such dimensions as body shape, body image, and 2 physical attractiveness, clothing, cosmetics, hair, and accessories Note: You cannot prevent the formation of impressions based on these dimensions of physical appearance.. this one! Proxemics PUBLIC TERRITORY - an area that individuals - the use of space by human beings 1 may freely enter - the physical arrangements, distance, INTERACTIONAL TERRITORY - a mobile area 2 and territoriality in which individuals congregate informally and the boundaries of which are likely to move HOME TERRITORY TERRITORIALITY - the attempt to 3 control space. BODY TERRITORY- marked by the skin or by 4 the clothing with which we cover our bodies. this one! Paralanguage VOCAL CHARACTERISTICS (laughing, crying, - also called vocalics relate to the 1 moaning, yelling, whining, belching, etc.) ( r sounds you hear - concerns how something is SAID VOCAL QUALIFIERS (pitch, volume, rate, and 2 rather than what is SAID quality) VOCAL SEGREGATES OR INTERFERENCES 3 (OK, you know, well, all right, uh, err, ah, um) this one! Chronemics - concerned with how you use and structure time 1 - a significant area of NVC because you generally perceive your actions and reactions as a time sequence - one of the least understood but most important nonverbal sub-codes this one! Haptics - study of touch and touching 1 - Touching (zero-proxemics) There are 16 types of touch that communicate attitudes, regulate interaction, or fall into "a meaningless" category (when said to be incidental): patting, pinching, embracing, licking, linking, stroking, guiding, slapping, punching, grooming, shaking, kissing, holding, and kicking. Categories of touching: FUNCTIONAL/PROFESSIONAL LEVEL, SOCIAL/POLITE this LEVEL, FRIENDSHIP/WARMTH LEVEL, LOVE/INTIMACY LEVEL one! Olfaction - the process whereby you recognize certain odors 1 - the forgotten sense (Dale Leathers) - you associate certain smells with visual representations - it deals with the basic survival needs: the scent of emotion and sexual attraction this one! Silence - the lack of sound 1 - could mean yes, no, I don't know, maybe, wait, dah..., and so many other things depending on the person/s and the factors surrounding the situation this one! Gustatory system - oral taste sense 1 - exists within the "invisible system" - a part of perceptual system but more as a feedback system than as an actual subcode - operate more as an information system this one! Three Systems under NVC VISIBLE SYSTEM - refers to what can be detected 1 through the sense of seeing AUDIBLE SYSTEM - refers to what can be detected through the sense of hearing TELEPATHIC SYSTEM - the invisible or the unknown system that operates at or just below the conscious level important to the nonverbal function. It is also concerned with the psychological and physical systems that operate to establish our daily rhythms, moods, and emotions. this one! The mind is just like a muscle — the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets and the more it can expand. Idowu Koyenikan Thank you! Have a great day ahead.
