# Understanding The Social Self "No man is an island, entire of himself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main" - Jhon Donne ## Understanding The Social Self - The ability to interact with, relate to, and see oneself concerning others. - Includes confidence, communication skills, self-worth, body image, empathy, and relationship building ## An individual is a product of social interaction - Incorporates ways adults and others talk and interpret the world into their own ways and thinking - Through interaction and communication, an individual transmits their society's traditions, beliefs, values, norms, and skills to the next generation, thus influencing the course of future development. "The social self refers to a person's characteristic behavior in social situations." ## The Root Of My Identity: It is Who We are and What We Aspire to Be ### The Interpersonal self or social self - Is that part of the individual that engages with face-to-face relations with others. - Includes gender, age, place of birth, and any other social categorization that helps characterize a person's identity ### Human are sociable group-based culture - A significant position of our “self” and its behavior is socially directed and influenced. - If an individual has no interaction, especially with significant people, we would not have language, social norms, culture, or a perspective of the world around us. ## The Social self is the product of our earliest childhood interaction ### Vygotsky Theory - Each individual is a product of social interaction. - Vygotsky's theory (1962) proposes that the child's development is best understood in relation to social and cultural experience - Social interaction, in particular, is seen as a critical force in development. ### Vygotsky fundamentally used his ideas to explain how children develop - According to his theory, the child learns by observing and imitating adults. ### Social Influence - The process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs, or behavior are modified by the presence or action of others. ## Society has made it obvious of expectations set by others that ideally should be followed. - For instance, people are expected to say or not say some things in some situations or to behave in a particular way - **Social Influence stems from social roles and social norms.** ### Social Roles - Refer to society's expectation of a person's behavior in a given setting or status. ### Social Norms - Refer to unwritten rules that govern what people can and cannot do in social circumstances and surroundings. ## Emerging Culture of Today's Generation ### Korean Wave: (Korean music, fashion, food, drama) - The Korean Wave, also known as **Hallyu,** has become a significant cultural phenomenon that has captured the attention and admiration of young people around the world, including in the Philippines. - This wave encompasses various aspects of Korean culture, such as music, fashion, food, and television dramas. ### The Korean Wave exemplifies how social influence operates in contemporary society. - It shapes the attitudes, behaviors, and cultural preferences of the younger generation by providing a distinct and appealing social identity. - The adoption of Korean cultural elements reflects the impact of social roles and norms. ## Cosplay (Costume Play): - Cosplay, short for “costume play,” is a popular and creative activity where individuals dress up in costumes and accessories to represent a specific character, often from anime, manga, video games, movies, or other forms of media. ### Reasons why cosplays are worn: 1. To take pride in one's own creation 2. To wear something out of the ordinary 3. To show support and/or interest in an anime/manga/videogame 4. Self-expression. ### Cosplay is a manifestation of social influence - Individuals engage in this activity by adopting specific social roles, adhering to social norms within the cosplay community, and being influenced by broader cultural trends. ## What is Culture? - Can be defined in several ways: - Simply gives people life's meaning. - A source of one's identity, of confidence, and self-esteem. - Allows others to understand the world and define their places within it. ## The Filipino Culture - Known as one of the best traits in the world. - Combination of both East and West cultures - Core values from their ancestors remained and are still practiced until today. ### Belief System - Filipinos are Religious. - The influence of the Church on the minds that results in the customary Sunday Mass that everyone should attend. - They even teach everyone the importance of the Sacraments, and pray at almost any time of the day. - They believed a lot in the supernatural. - They even think that success is a blessing from above a product of prayer and faith. - Filipinos strong faith in God as seen in their various practices. - This belief system results in traits like perseverance, patience, and endurance. ### Value System - A guide to a man's behavior and action as he relates himself in moral situations. - Filipino values can be seen from the aspects of personal and social relationships. - Includes languages and dialects used, music and dances, food, religion, and different ways of celebrating important cultural events. ### Emphasis is given to social relationships - This can be seen through the hospitality they give their visitors and friends and relatives. - They engage themselves in mutual cooperation, which is best seen and expressed through “Bayanihan”. ### UTANG NA LOOB - A sort of technique of reciprocity of debt of gratitude to others within the family circle or primary group, which are sometimes unlimited in nature, emotional rather than financial. ### PAKIKISAMA - The value of belonging and loyalty, with sensitivity to the feeling of others on the principle of “give and take.” - It is a folk concept of good public relations and avoidance of conflict with the majority of the group. ### HIYA - Depends on what others will think, say, or do. - Because of "hiya", a Filipino cannot say “no” even if it is against his will to do what is being requested. - It is a form of social control, while declining a request may be discouraged ## Some Regional Traits of Filipinos ### ILOCANOS - Most adventurous, hardworking, and frugal of Filipinos. ### BICOLANOS - Religious, mild tempered, and musically inclined; fond of spicy food with hot pepper and coconut. ### BISAYANS - Extravagant, carefree, and jolly. - They love clothes, jewelry, and gay parties. - Lavish spenders and prefer to have good times to hard work.
