The Self, Society , and Culture Activity By referring to your pictures when you were in elementary , high school, and now that you are in college , list down your salient characteristics that you remember. Analysis after having examined your “self” in its different stages , answer the following: 1. What are the similarities in all stages of my “self”? 2. What are the differences in my “self” across the three stages of my life? 3. What are the possible reasons for the differences in me? Characteristics of the Self 1. Separate 2. Self contained 3. Independent 4. Consistent 5. Unitary 6. Private Separate self self is distinct from other selves, unique it has its own identity. Self – contained and independent its distinctiveness allows to be self contained with its own thoughts, characteristics and volition does not require any other self to exist. In itself it can exist. Consistent It has a personality that is enduring expected to persist Unitary center of all experiences and thoughts. The emotion and thoughts processes and converge. Private Each human person sorts out information, feelings, emotions and thoughts. Isolated from the external world. It lives within its own world. Nature vs. Nurture : The Self of what might be , can be , what it will be. Social Constructivist theory The view of the person and social context merged. Where the boundaries of one cannot fully be separated from the boundaries of others. (stevens, 1996) All behavior as it develops passes through the following sequence: 1. control by other 2. Control by self 3. Automatization Self regulation - is a stages of development that lies between the point where the assistance is required from the other people and the point where the regulation is no longer needed it has become automatic. Self should not be seen as a static entity that stay constant. Self is to be seen as something that is unceasing flux. - constant struggle with external reality. - malleable in dealings with society. Self always in participation with social life its identity subject to influence here and there. The Self and Culture French Anthropologist Marcel Mauss Every self has two faces. 1. Moi is aperson’s basic identity. A person’ s sense of who she/he is. His biological givenness. 2.
